TikTok settlement overview:

  • Who: Alabama reached a settlement with TikTok Inc. and its parent company, ByteDance Ltd.
  • Why: The state alleged TikTok harmed children and misled users about the safety of its platform.
  • Where: The TikTok lawsuit was filed in Alabama state court.
  • How to get help: If you or your child suffered mental health harm after using social media between the ages of 5 and 17, you may qualify to join a social media addiction lawsuit.

TikTok has agreed to pay at least $100 million and implement new safety measures to resolve Alabama claims concerning the platform’s impact on children and teenagers.

Under the settlement agreement, TikTok and ByteDance will introduce several measures intended to limit young users’ time on the platform and give parents greater control over their children’s use of the app. TikTok is not admitting wrongdoing as part of the agreement.

The settlement requires a two-hour daily usage limit for young users, restricted access between midnight and 6 a.m. and a notifications limit during school hours. TikTok will also prohibit the use of cosmetic filters for children and teenagers, among other app modifications.

The TikTok lawsuit settlement provides for at least $100 million in restitution and remediation. That amount could increase to as much as $300 million if 40 additional state attorneys general enter into similar agreements with TikTok within a specified period.

Alabama agreement marks first state settlement over TikTok’s alleged risks to young users

Alabama reached a first-in-the-nation settlement with TikTok just days before it was set to become the first state to take claims against the company to trial.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said parents “can rest easier knowing real protections are in place to shield their children from the dangers of social media addiction.”

Meanwhile, TikTok said its priority has been maintaining a safe and positive environment and that the agreement builds on its existing safety tools for teenagers.

The Alabama agreement comes as TikTok faces legal challenges from other states concerning children’s safety, platform design and the alleged effects of social media addiction on young users.

According to Law360, more than a dozen states are suing TikTok, alleging that it targets young users and encourages habitual use while downplaying alleged effects on mental health and development.

TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, have faced other lawsuits over children’s safety and privacy, and the platform has so far settled three lawsuits brought by young people who claimed it harmed their mental health.

The TikTok lawsuit is State of Alabama v. TikTok Inc., et al., Case No. 03-CV-2025-900628.00, in the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Alabama.
