A new class action against Tesla Inc. alleges the car company manipulates odometer readings on its vehicles to prematurely accelerate the expiration of their warranties, thereby reducing or avoiding its full warranty obligations.

Plaintiff Nyree Hinton filed the class action complaint against Tesla Inc. and Tesla Finance LLC on April 2 in California state court, alleging violations of state and federal laws.

The Tesla class action lawsuit claims Tesla manipulates odometer readings using a complex system of predictive algorithms and energy consumption metrics, resulting in inflated mileage figures that benefit the company at the expense of consumers.

Hinton argues Tesla is able to accelerate both the rate of depreciation of its vehicles and the expiration of their warranties through the use of its odometer system.

Tesla odometers inflate mileage by up to 117%, class action claims

The plaintiff claims Tesla’s odometer system can inflate the mileage traveled by its vehicles by up to 117%, thus enabling the company to induce consumers to purchase extended warranties.

Additionally, the inflated readings allegedly lead to premature warranty expiration, thus forcing consumers to pay for repairs that should have been covered.

The Tesla odometer class action lawsuit says the automaker is guilty of violating California’s unfair competition and false advertising laws, breach of contract and unjust enrichment, among other things.

Hinton wants to represent a California class of consumers who purchased a new or used Tesla vehicle for personal, family or household purposes. The plaintiff is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

In another warranty issue, a Tesla customer filed a lawsuit in April 2025 alleging Tesla refused to honor the warranty on car battery repairs.

I own the Model Y. Please add me. I always wondered why my odometer reading was through the roof. Tesla is doing too much.
