A concerned pet owner recently filed a class action lawsuit against the maker of Taste of the Wild dog food claiming that the products are contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals.

Plaintiff Martin Grossman is suing defendant Diamond Pet Foods Inc. over allegations that the company’s Taste of the Wild products are contaminated with harmful chemicals including pesticides.

Diamond Pet Foods manufactures and distributes Taste of the Wild products, marketing the dog food as formulated “based on your pet’s ancestral diet.”

The company further supports the quality of their products by stating: “Every ingredient is carefully selected from trusted sources, each recipe is designed by our veterinarians and nutritionists to meet specific nutritional requirements and every product is tested for quality and safety before leaving our facilities.”

Despite claims of natural ingredients and high quality nutrition, Taste of the Wild dog food may not be as incredible as marketing suggests. Grossman alleges that Diamond Pet Food products contain a series of undesirable contaminates which can cause harm to animals.

Through testing of Taste of the Wild, Grossman says he discovered the dog food contains heavy metals including arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium, as well as pesticides, acrylamide, and BPA.

These contaminates can allegedly build up in an animal’s body and cause toxicity, leading to adverse health conditions. Health conditions reported in relation to pet food contaminates include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal damage, nerve damage, neurological side effects, seizures, heart problems, cancers, and in some cases death.

In his Diamond Pet Food class action, Grossman alleges that the manufacturer knew about the contaminates in their Taste of the Wild pet foods, but chose to mislead consumers in an attempt to increase their profits. The Taste of the Wild manufacturer allegedly acknowledges and aims to capitalize on the trend of pet owners prioritizing natural, nutritious ingredients in their pet food.

“Defendants know that certain consumers seek out and wish to purchase premium pet foods that possess high quality ingredients and do not contain chemicals or contaminants, and that these consumers will pay more for pet foods that they believe possess these qualities than for pet foods that they do not believe possess these qualities,” the Taste of the Wild dog food class action claims.

Grossman seeks to represent a Class of consumers who have purchased contaminated Taste of the Wild dog food since May 1, 2013. The Diamond Pet Food class action seeks restitution, disgorgement, statutory damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Plaintiffs are represented by Robert K. Shelquist and Rebecca A. Peterson of Lockridge Grindal Nauen PLLP; Joseph DePalma, Steven J. Greenfogel, and Susana Cruz-Hodge of Lite DePalma Greenberg LLC; Daniel E. Gustafson, Karla M. Gluek and Raina C. Borrelli of Gustafson Gluek PLLC; Kevin A. Seely and Steven M. McKany of Robbins Arroyo LLP; and Charles Laduca and Kathrine Van Dyck of Cuneo Gilbert & Laduca LLP.

The Taste of the Wild Contaminated Pet Food Class Action Lawsuit is Grossman v. Shell & Kampeter Inc. d/b/a Diamond Pet Foods, Case No. 2:18-cv-02344-JAM-AC, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.

Had a chihuahua with seizures that we medicated for 2 years and they were under control with the meds. She also developed a heart murmur that couldn’t be controlled.
I am angry that I may have contributed to this with her diet. Sign me up please

Please add me to this list. I had three Greyhounds pass. 1 seizures, 1 unknown reasons, 1 kidney failure came home and found passed away. 1. foster pitt bull that died from lymphoma and 1 Whippet that has Congestive heart failure. I fed nothing but TOTW. Changed to a new food recently, but want to be made aware of all info on this case.

  3. Lynn Dorr says:

Please add me to this suit. I fed it to my dogs for a few years until I switched to another product. I also was feeding them the salmon. I hope the one I switched to doesn’t have these problems.

  4. Cheryl Jones says:

PLEASE ADD ME… I had no idea and my pups have eaten this for over 3 years now…

  6. Claire Hackley says:

I fed my dogs taste of tge wild for over a decade. My french bulldog ate nothing but taste of tge wild his entire life. in June of 2016 when he was almost ten years old, he went to the vet for his senior check up, blood work, and over all physical. my vet said he was the healthiest frech bulldog that age that he had ever seen.
October 2016 he had his first seizure. bloodwork showed elevated kidney and liver levels. he very quickly became paralyzed in his back end. testing ruled out a spinal injury. I even tested his ceramic water bowl for lead, because his symptoms came on so quickly and even my vet ( who has been in practice for 35+ years) was confused.
the seizures were unpredictable. nothing about how he got sick and how quickly he declined made sense.
Although he had none of the other symptoms of a brain tumor, my vet figured that was the only possible explanation.
But now THIS, this heartbreaking lawsuit against the company who I trusted my dogs well being and diet to.
Could it have been that my dog was poisoned slowly his entire life, and it finally caught up with him? that would make sense, seeing as he was never fed or given anything that wasnt all natural ( including toys and treats) I want more answers. i want to know if there is anything i can do for my dogs now who have eaten taste of the wild all of their lives. should i have them tested for anything? is there anything that can reverse any damege done, or flush thier systems of built up toxins.
I swithched foods about 6 months ago, and I am so glad I did now that I have discovered this lawsuit.
But now I want more answers

The one thing I know is that I’ve got a Golden that has major allergy issues with all other dog foods and has none with Taste of the Wild.

The real issue is that the products used in the dog food are the same that are in our food supply. Stuff like farm raised salmon, chicken, duck, pork, bison, beef, Ag field crops and etcetera. I would guess that due to the losses in sales the economic impacted to the dog food company is going to be massive and Grossman’s attorney’s will probably make some money when the law suit is resolved down the road at some point.

How does this guy know of the cantaments? Were are your test results? When did he get the testing done? And by whom ?

I can’t just believe in something without proof.

Google clean label project…they did a big study on dog food last year and TOTW was rated 1 star…im not sure what to make of all this as I’m just finding it out tonight

      1. Kitty says:

But clean lable project also gave alpo dog food 5 stars so i don’t know if i trust that site either. I read taste of the wild gets bad ratings because of how diamond responded to a recall years ago before they were bought out recently.
I would be more interested on hearing about this as this is what i have always fed my 8 year old girl and now my 10 month old puppy please reply with links and info if you have it.

  9. Denise Blackerby says:

I would like to be added to this class action as well. My dogs have been eating TOTW for years.

  10. Shala wyant says:

I have been feeding the salmon kind to my dog for years. She has been diagnosed recently with a brain tumor and I know that some of these contaminants have been linked to cancer. I realize it would be difficult to prove causation but I will not be feeding TOTW anymore and would like to have my name added as well.
