Johnson & Johnson is facing a potential conjoined talc powder cancer lawsuit from 18 different people, either filing on behalf of themselves or their loved ones.
According to the talc powder cancer lawsuit, the people filing the claim have no relation to each other and are attempting to file this lawsuit due to the similar nature of their injuries.
Each of the plaintiffs, or their loved ones, had used Johnson & Johnson’s talc based baby powder and shower-to-shower powders for feminine hygiene purposes.
In alleged result, these women had developed ovarian cancer and have had to contend with the deadly condition.
While most the claimants filing this talc powder cancer lawsuit had used the powders personally, others are filing on behalf of female loved ones who had used the powder and were unable to file legal action themselves.
Even though the claimants are trying to file conjointly, they may face challenges due to the fact that many of them are citizens from different states and jurisdictions.
This means that their motion to file the talc powder cancer lawsuit conjointly faces “complete diversity,” which creates challenges when presenting a lawsuit like this in a uniformed manner. Some of the plaintiffs involved in the talc powder cancer lawsuit include:
- Missouri plaintiff Farah S.
- California plaintiff Tonya H.
- Texas plaintiff Joyce S.
- Illinois plaintiff Tim D.
- California plaintiff Crystal R.
- Texas plaintiff Jennifer P.
- Ohio plaintiff Lisa I.
- Georgia plaintiff Sylvia L.
Also named as a defendant in the talc powder cancer lawsuit is Imerys Talc America Inc., which had been mining the talc particles and was the supplier for Johnson & Johnson. Talc particles are soft in nature, and can be ground up into fine powder for hygienic purposes.
Overview of Talcum Powder Cancer
For generations, women would apply talcum powder all over their body to reduce friction, control wetness and for hygiene.
One of these purposes included applying the talcum powder to their genital area to reduce vaginal odors and wetness, a practice that has been reportedly encouraged by Johnson & Johnson for years.
When talcum powder is applied to the woman’s genital area, the particles can enter the body through the vagina and eventually make their way into the ovaries. If the particles settle in the ovaries, they can eventually fester after being embedded for years and turn into cancer cells.
While ovarian cancer is treatable, it can be deadly if not diagnosed at an early stage.
Even though this is a dangerous side effect, Johnson & Johnson had allegedly failed to warn women and the general public of the reported connection.
Each of the plaintiffs involved in the talc powder cancer lawsuit are seeking damages for negligence and for concealing safety information on a potentially dangerous product.
The Talc Powder Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 4:2016-cv-01362, in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Missouri, Eastern Division.
