Takata airbag recall driving steering wheelThe Takata Corp. is an automotive parts manufacturer and distributor based out of Japan. Four years ago, the company initiated a massive recall of automobile airbags due to a defect in their airbag inflators. The defect was causing the airbags to either fail to deploy in an accident or explode during deployment.

The Takata recall list affected 37 million vehicles from many different global manufacturers. You can see a list of the affected makes and models on our investigation page.

Recently, the Takata Corp. has expanded this recall by sweeping in an additional 3.3 million cars of different makes and models. To date, 180 injurious events and up to 20 deaths have been reported in connection with the problems associated with the airbag inflators.

Airbag Inflators

According to regulatory agencies such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) and the manufacturer’s analysis, the small metal cartridge which houses the airbag inflator is the source of the problem and cause of injuries in an explosive situation.

The cartridge is filled with ammonium nitrate, a chemical propellant that is theoretically dangerous only in large amounts. Ammonium nitrate in this tiny portion should be innocuous but, because of a lack of a certain drying agent, the substance breaks down and contributes to deployment of the airbag with such force that the metal box fragments and its pieces fly throughout the interior of the vehicle.

Adverse events including wrongful death have included gruesome injuries from the fragmented metal. The ammonium nitrate propellant degrades more quickly, contributing to this explosiveness, in environments where high humidity and heat are common.

When the Takata Corp. first initiated this action in 2013, it set about addressing the defects in vehicles located in these types of climates first. Domestically, that meant the American Midwest, Southwest, and South Central, and Southeast.

Taking the time to view the new Takata recall list in full is imperative if you have been injured in an accident involving airbags in these areas. Viewing the new Takata recall list is also important if you have been injured in a car crash where an airbag failed to deploy at all.

When a consumer buys a car equipped with an airbag, she or he reasonably expects the added protection that this product should provide. Failure to properly address an airbag defect is unacceptable and causes pain and suffering.

Among the expanded 3.3 million vehicles on the Takata recall list are different years and models of Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daimler trucks and vans, Ferrari, Fisker, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar Land Rover, Jeep, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

Persons who have been injured by an exploding Takata airbag or who were injured in a car accident because the airbag failed to deploy may have grounds to file a Takata airbag lawsuit.
