airbag defect TakataThe Takata airbag recall has yet to be implemented due to the large number of vehicles involved. Investigators found over 34 million vehicles with a severe airbag defect that could cause the airbag to explode, sending shrapnel flying towards the driver and any passengers in the car. While the exact cause of the Takata airbag explosions is not known, the plan for the Takata airbag recall is expected to be released in the fall.

The 34 million (possibly more) vehicles with the airbag defect come from 11 different car manufacturers.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Takata is allegedly still using a chemical that is suspected to be the cause of the airbag explosions. New vehicles may carry the same airbag defect risks as the recalled vehicles. Already, some of the airbags that were intended to replace the defective ones have been recalled themselves.

U.S. Representative Markwayne Mullin expressed frustration with the airbag explosions and the lack of responsibility that has followed: “A screw-up is a screw-up, but take the blame,” he said during a hearing. “Who’s going to be responsible for this? You don’t know? What do you mean you don’t know? … I’m sitting here maybe thinking we haven’t been moving very fast because you haven’t took ownership of it.”

Takata Airbag Lawsuits

So far, the Takata airbag defect has led to six deaths and dozens of injuries. Over 50 models from car manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, and many more are involved in the Takata airbag recall.

Although the recall is only now picking up speed, Takata was allegedly aware of the danger of airbag explosions as far back as 2004, possibly even 2001.

Plaintiffs have filed Takata airbag lawsuits alleging that the manufacturer failed to warn against the severe airbag defect, and a Takata airbag class action lawsuit investigation has also been launched.
