At this point, the news of the possible correlation between Viagra and melanoma has spread throughout the United States. This has spawned a growing litigation movement and speculation if the dangers of Viagra’s side effects outweigh its benefits.
Viagra is the most popular erectile dysfunction treatment drug in the United States. It was approved by the FDA in 1998, and is manufactured by Pfizer earning millions for the drug giant each year, even with the release of Cialis and Levitra. However, the popularity that Viagra has accumulated over the years does not protect Pfizer from the product liability charges it is currently facing for Viagra melanoma occurrences.
Viagra Melanoma Litigation
According to legal sources, at least one Viagra melanoma lawsuit has been filed with many more expected to be filed. However, legal experts state that further research needs to be conducted into the alleged link, with additional inquiries of the strong possibility of Cialis and Levitra also causing skin cancer.
The first Viagra melanoma lawsuit was filed by Edward C. in late 2014, alleging that Pfizer knew about the risk of Viagra melanoma, and failed to protect him against the dangers of this product. According to the Viagra skin cancer lawsuit, Edward took Viagra in 2008 to treat his erectile dysfunction. He was later diagnosed with melanoma in 2012. Edward filed this Viagra melanoma lawsuit after learning of a recent study that informed him that men who had taken Viagra at some point their lives could be at a high risk of developing melanoma.
Overview of Viagra Melanoma Connection
The study that suggest a connection between Viagra and melanoma was published in the June 2014 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, which found that significant evidence of the alleged correlation. The study found that men who took Viagra were 84 percent more likely to develop melanoma, after observing thousands of subjects for 10 years. While the study did not solidly prove that Viagra could cause melanoma, it did indicate a strong possibility. It is important to note that Viagra was not implicated to cause minor forms of skin cancer, which are much more treatable than melanoma.
Additionally, at the time of this study, the more recent erectile dysfunction drugs, Cialis and Levitra, had not been approved and were not included in the study. Due to the similar pharmaceutical chemistry, it is strongly suspected that these drugs may also cause melanoma. Unfortunately, there is as little proof of proving the link between Viagra and melanoma, as with Cialis and Levitra.
In the study, the authors noted that more comprehensive studies were needed to confirm whether or not Viagra had a connection to melanoma. In the study, it was noted that Viagra had opened certain genetic pathways between cells, which made patients more vulnerable to the development of melanoma. Additionally, concern over the possibility of Viagra melanoma was raised several years prior to the publication of the study, when the FDA issued a warning announcement in 2008.
The FDA announcement consisted of a warning letter sent to Pfizer, highlighting the concern of the company’s marketing campaign of Viagra. Specifically, the agency criticized a Viagra promotional video that was featured on CNN, which reportedly failed to describe any side effects associated with Viagra or any other erectile dysfunction medications, like sudden heart attacks. The agency requested Pfizer to stop making such advertisements, noting several penalties and violations that could be incurred through false advertising.
Viagra Melanoma Lawsuits
As of now, there are very few official Viagra melanoma lawsuits filed in the country’s district courts, alleging that Pfizer failed to protect them against the dangers of their products. However as mentioned before, legal experts predict that many more of these claims will be filed, due to the widespread popularity of Viagra and the severe consequence of melanoma.
If you or a loved one took Viagra and developed melanoma, you may be eligible to file a Viagra melanoma lawsuit. A Viagra melanoma lawsuit could entitle victims or their families to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, suffering, or wrongful death.
