A New York man filed a new lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb, alleging he suffered from serious side effects of saxagliptin.

The plaintiff, Roger A., says he began taking saxagliptin in 2011 order to help lower his high blood sugar levels from his type 2 diabetes. However, as a result of his exposure to this diabetes drug, Roger suffered from significant side effects of saxagliptin, his lawsuit alleges, including heart failure.

Roger’s lawsuit alleges that Bristol-Myers didn’t conduct adequate studies on its saxagliptin drugs, Onglyza, and Kombiglyze XR. He says it was only after the company had begun selling these drugs in July 2009 that it conducted a Cardiovascular Outcome Trial for saxagliptin, which the FDA had actually recommended in 2008. This trial found that users of saxagliptin had a “statistically significant increased risk of being hospitalized due to heart failure,” the lawsuit alleges.

According to the lawsuit, the side effects of saxagliptin can include major issues like “heart failure, congestive heart failure, cardiac failure, death from heart failure, and other serious health conditions.”

Roger’s lawsuit alleges that the pharmaceutical giant failed to warn patients and the medical community about the risk of cardiovascular side effects of saxagliptin, instead choosing to promote its saxagliptin drugs as a safe and effective type-2 diabetes treatment. Had Roger been adequately warned about the risk of these serious cardiovascular side effects of saxagliptin, he claims, he and his prescribing physicians would have chosen a safer alternative and avoided these risks entirely.

Roger filed his lawsuit over side effects of saxagliptin on multiple counts, including strict products liability, negligence, and failure to warn.

Background of Saxagliptin Drugs

Saxagliptin drugs like Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR are manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca. Onglyza was granted FDA approval in 2009, and Kombiglyze in 2010, as a treatment for type-2 diabetes. Both of these saxagliptin drugs belong to a class of diabetes medications known as incretin mimetics, which work to stimulate the release of insulin to help regulate blood sugar.

Unfortunately, side effects of saxagliptin drugs may be severe and even life-threatening in nature.

Cardiovascular Side Effects of Saxagliptin

Heart failure is a condition where the heart becomes too weak to properly pump blood through the body. This is a life-threatening condition, but even if a patient survives, they may suffer from permanent problems because of symptoms that remain. These patients may need to change their diet, exercise, lose weight, or manage their stress in order to manage their symptoms and reduce the risk of further heart problems.

Filing an Onglyza Lawsuit

If you or a loved one has suffered from cardiovascular side effects of saxagliptin, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot undo the damage caused by these complications, and cannot bring a loved one back to life, it can at least help to alleviate the financial damages caused by medical expenses and lost wages.

The Side Effects of Saxagliptin Lawsuit is Case No. 157720/2018, in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York.
