Many patients who have suffered from difficulties from their Zimmer Persona knee implant may wonder if contacting a Zimmer Persona lawyer is in their best interest.
The Zimmer Persona knee implant system was approved in March 2012. It consists of a Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal tibial plate that is connected to the bone in a non-traditional manner without the use of cement.
This trabecular metal tibial plate is attached to the tibia bone with two pegs that are implanted into the bone. The bone is supposed to grow around the pegs, thereby firmly adhering to the implant and giving stability to the knee.
But in 2015, Zimmer announced a voluntary recall of all its Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal tibial plate components. This affected nearly 12,000 units. Zimmer noted that two major problems had been reported regarding their medical device.
The first complication is a condition known as radiolucent lines. Radiolucent lines, visible in X-rays, are a sign of what is known as poor seating. When gaps show up between the implant and the bone, these are radiolucent lines. This is the first step in loosening.
A second complication of the Zimmer Persona TM tibial plate is loosening. Loosening is when the components of the knee implant begin to come loose from where they are supposed to be. This often results in revision surgery, an additional surgery to replace or remove the first implant.
Zimmer said that of the complaints it has received regarding the Persona device, almost 40% of them had symptomatic radiolucent lines or had to undergo revision surgery. Revision surgery is more complicated than the original knee replacement surgeries and patients often experience more complications.
After Zimmer announced its recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a Class II recall of the device. A Class II recall is for devices that may only create a risk of reversible harm.
