Samsung Refrigerator Consumer Complaint Overview:

  • Who: Consumer Reports found that more than 600 complaints about Samsung refrigerators were reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission between January 2019 and December 2021.
  • Why: Consumers reported issues with malfunctioning ice makers and failure to maintain appropriate temperatures.
  • Where: The Samsung refrigerators were sold in the United States.

More than 600 consumer complaints about Samsung refrigerators have been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) between January 2019 and December 2021, according to Consumer Reports.

The Samsung refrigerator complaints include reports of malfunctioning ice makers and failure to maintain appropriate temperatures.

Consumer Reports notes that 211 consumer complaints cited food spoilage and 62 complaints reported food poisoning.

Samsung reportedly received more complaints during this time frame than any other manufacturers based on publicly available data posted on the SaferProducts.gov database.

“The sudden increase in reports must have a cause completely independent from the quality of our products,” Samsung told Consumer Reports. “This is clearly shown in the data you provided (referencing the SaferProducts.gov complaints), which reflects dozens of models manufactured across an entire decade simultaneously and inexplicably developing problems starting in 2020.”

Samsung Refrigerators With French Doors Not Recommended Based on Recent Consumer Survey Data

Consumer Reports tests more than 20 fridge brands and recommends six Samsung refrigerators (three top-freezer models and three side-by-side models). However, Consumer Reports says that it does not recommend Samsung refrigerators with French doors due to unfavorable reliability ratings based on its most recent member survey data.

Testing by Consumer Reports is only performed on new products that are purchased directly from retailers. The new Samsung refrigerators tested by Consumer Reports reportedly received Very Good or Excellent ratings based on their temperature-related performance.

Consumer Reports says it also conducts annual member surveys about consumers’ experiences with refrigerators that they purchased within the past decade.

“We use this data to calculate predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings for refrigerators, as well as to identify problem areas with these appliances,” Consumer Reports explained.

Results from the member survey data showed that Samsung French-door refrigerators, side-by-side models and bottom-freezer models had owner satisfaction ratings of Fair to Poor.

Facebook Group Urges Samsung Refrigerator Recall

A Facebook group called Samsung Refrigerator Recall U.S.A. now has more than 100,000 members, according to Consumer Reports.

“Everybody thought that [their refrigerator] was [Samsung’s] only lemon, and then we started putting all these puzzles together,” Tom O’Shea, the Facebook group’s administrator, told Consumer Reports. He says the Facebook group encourages owners of Samsung refrigerators to keep pursuing service claims and seeking compensation.

Samsung is facing a refrigerator defect class action lawsuit over issues with the external ice dispenser on models with French doors, including allegations that the ice dispensers leak, produce slush and create excessive fan noise.

Another Samsung class action lawsuit alleges that the company’s “fingerprint-resistant” coating on some of its kitchen appliances peels off, leaving an “unsightly patchwork” of regular stainless steel and the black coating that has not peeled off yet.

400 thoughts onSamsung Refrigerators Subject to Hundreds of Consumer Complaints

  1. Mary Hutchinson says:

We purchased our 3rd Samsung refrigerator in April 2024. Immediately after purchase we became aware that the left door will not stay open so we are not able to load the fridge as left door keeps closing. You can place a large party platter or pizza box as door will not stay open long enough. I have reached out to Best Buy, they sent a tech and he stated it was the ice maker causing a weight issue, that’s in correct as I have had two others, same design and both doors stayed opened to load fridge. I have been giving the run around by Samsung, I have even contacted Mr Higby a Samsung VIP who delegated it to Oscar T in the Extra Care Dept. His response to me was the refrigerator gets cold therefor it’s NOT defective. I have the use of only one arm right now and coping with this left door issue is extremely hard. That door actually shuts on you while your arm is still in the fridge. You can’t pull out the deli or veggie draws unless you place yourself against the door to stop it from closing. All I am asking is for Samsung to fix it, replace it and I even stated I would upgrade to different model and pay the difference. I have hit a brick wall with Samsung. I was told if they sent out another technician and if he stated until was defective than Samsung would compensate by replacement or refund. Samsung sent a technician again yesterday and the technician put in writing that unit was defective and Samsung stated technician did not find a defect that technician just stated door was heavy. I have the report from Service Quick which does state unit is defective however the technician chose his words carefully in order to protect Samsung. Technician lifted up the left door while he was here and then it stayed open. I was told this we can’t do this, he was just experimenting. I will never buy another Samsung appliance, unfortunately we just replaced our entire kitchen with all Samsung! Never never again.

I purchase a refrigerator and shortly after a year I was told warranty expired this was mis leading because when I purchased the refrigerator from Lowes they advertised it as 10 years and now I’m told that’s just for the compressor

Less than 1 yr after purchase I call the store that sold us the french door frig. The ice make was frozen up and they sent a repair man to fix the problem. He replaced something and it worked for a short period of time and the same thing happened again. The thing I thought was strange is that he left no paperwork and warned me about others who had the same problem. After some research I found it that the frig had a DEFECT issue……….So my story is now added to the rest. Here’s hoping Samsung will step up to the problem.

  4. Zulma Cruz says:

I have a Samsung French door refrigerator with the same ice make issue – the ice maker is constantly freezing up and requires defrosting a couple times a month. I would be interested in joining a class action suit as Samsung is not interested in responding to fixing their issue without a cost to me. This is has been a recurring problem since I purchased it. I won’t recommend it to anyone.

  5. Beverly Anderson says:

I would like to get in the class action lawsuit. From day one I have been having problems with the ice maker on my Samsung french door refrigerator. I can’t even use the ice maker. Had to shut it off because it keeps freezing up.

  6. Jennifer Mendonca says:

Same problem as above. It is ridiculous! The ice machine never works. We have to go outside to our garage refrigerator (a much older Kenmore Elite) and use it instead often. The time it takes to defrost is unacceptable and how often you have to do it too! I would like to be a part of this too. Ours has been trouble since day 1 too. Now to the point it only makes ice for a few days after the process of defrosting and resetting the fridge. Samsung needs to make this right with the customers who had no idea they were buying an expensive but defective fridge due to it’s design!

  7. Leetonia Young says:

We have a Samsung French door refrigerator with the same ice make issue – the ice maker constantly freezes up and requires defrosting at least 3 times a month. We are interested in joining a class action suit. Samsung has not shown interest in resolving or fixing the issue which should not be a cost to the buyer. This has been a recurring issued soon after we purchased it in 2017.
