A woman from California allegedly developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from glyphosate exposure, which is the main ingredient found in Roundup weedkiller. This woman recently filed a Roundup cancer lawsuit against manufacturer Monsanto Company, for allegedly failing to warn her that their weedkiller could cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Plaintiff Laurel W. says she regularly used Roundup for several years, without being aware of the alleged correlation glyphosate had with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer that develops in the body’s lymphatic system, with tumors developing from white blood cells called lymphocytes and can become potentially fatal if not treated.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has become widely associated with glyphosate after several studies showed a significantly higher risk of developing the disease after exposure. Even though Monsanto allegedly knew about this correlation for years, Laura claims, the company failed to disclose this information and only became public knowledge very recently.

According to the Roundup cancer lawsuit, Laurel had used the weedkiller between 1998 and 2002 for typical purposes as according to the product’s instructions.

Even with this diligence, Laurel developed and was eventually diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Sept. 27, 2016, and has been contending with the disease ever since.

Laurel opted to file legal action against Monsanto, after discovering that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was concerned about the potentially carcinogenic nature of glyphosate back in the 1980s.

Overview of Glyphosate and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Roundup has been on the market for over 40 years and is one of the most popular weedkillers in the world. Millions of people use Roundup every year for a variety of purposes ranging from lawn treatment to commercial nurseries.

The core ingredient glyphosate works by inhibiting the weed’s ability to conduct protein synthesis, which eventually causes the unwanted plant life to die off. While Roundup has been useful to numerous people over the years, its recent association with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has left the medical community and consumer population disturbed.

This alleged correlation became public knowledge when the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had released a report in March 2015, stating the glyphosate and four other pesticides could cause cancer. The IARC had released this report after reviewing the results of three significant studies from the Canada, Sweden, and the United States:

  • Canada Study: Published in November 2001 by the American Association for Cancer Research, researchers found that subjects exposed to glyphosate had developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under 10 years after exposure.
  • United States Study: Published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, researchers concluded the glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”
  • Sweden Study: Published in October 2008 in the International Journal of Cancer, researchers found that the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than 10 years after exposure.

Even though non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is potentially fatal, Monsanto allegedly failed to include this information on Roundup’s warning label. Laurel states she would not have used the weedkiller if she had known about the alleged correlation.

Laurel is seeking a multitude of damages in her Roundup cancer lawsuit, including counts of negligence and failure to warn.

This Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. CGC-18-570110, in the Superior Court of the State of California, for the County of San Francisco, Unlimited Jurisdiction.
