Couple says Monsanto Company knew of Roundup and Cancer CorrelationThe alleged correlation between Roundup and cancer has been the subject of concern for the past several years, and has earned Monsanto Company intense public scrutiny. The alleged Roundup and cancer correlation has also spurred litigation, with consumers filing claims across the country alleging Monsanto failed to include this information on their product warning label.

One of the most recent claims alleging a Roundup and cancer correlation was filed by a couple from Kentucky, alleging the husband had developed serious and permanent health complications after being exposed to the pesticide.

This Roundup cancer lawsuit was filed by plaintiff couple Francis H. and Ruth H., with the couple stating they had used the weedkiller according to product instructions. During all times relevant, Francis says he used Roundup on his personal property to treat weeds and kill off any other unwanted plant life.

While he says Roundup was properly used on his lawn, Francis was later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is currently contending with the disease. Francis and Ruth say they opted to file legal action after discovering the alleged correlation between Roundup and cancer.

Overview of Roundup and Cancer Correlation

The main ingredient of Roundup is glyphosate, which is a selective herbicide that inhibits the reproductive ability of certain weeds and eventually causes plant death. Roundup is one of the most popularly used pesticides in the world, with 250 million pounds of glyphosate used to treat crops, commercial nurseries, suburban lawns, parks, and golf courses.

The alleged link between Roundup and cancer recently came to public attention when a report was released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in March 2015. The report stated that glyphosate and four other pesticides were found to have carcinogenic properties, and could potentially cause cancer in consumers.

The report was published after the agency reviewed three studies from the United States, Canada, and Sweden, which indicated a link between Roundup and cancer:

  • The Canadian study was published in November 2001 by the American Association for Cancer Research in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, and found that men were more likely to develop non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under after 10 years after glyphosate exposure.
  • The United States study was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, and concluded that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and had an increased incidence rate of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • The Swedish study was published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, which found that the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis doubled after less than 10 years after glyphosate exposure.

It is important to note that researchers had speculated that there was a potential correlation between Roundup and cancer for years, and the Environmental Protection Agency had begun to suspect this in the 1980s.

Additionally, the company allegedly knew about the Roundup and cancer link at least since the 1990s, when the New York attorney general contended the company concealed the carcinogenic nature of their pesticide.

Francis and Ruth state that they would not have used the weedkiller if they had known about the potential link between Roundup and cancer.

This Roundup Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 5:18-cv-00128-TBR, in the United States District Court of the Western District Court of Kentucky, Paducah Division.
