Ram truck investigation overview:
- Who: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating nearly 1.2 million Ram 1500 and heavy-duty pickup trucks that were previously recalled.
- Why: A potential failure in the vehicles’ brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system could allow trucks to roll away unexpectedly.
- Where: The investigation is active in the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into nearly 1.2 million Ram pickup trucks due to concerns over a potential rollaway risk that led to the death and injury of at least six people.
The NHTSA says it is focusing on Ram 1500 and heavy-duty models from model years 2013 through 2018 that were previously recalled in 2017 and 2018 for transmission issues.
The investigation was announced by the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) and aims to assess the effectiveness of the remedies applied in the earlier Ram truck recall, identified as 17V-821 and 18V-100.
These recalls initially addressed issues with the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system, which could become stuck in the “open” position, allowing the trucks to be shifted out of park without a key or brake pedal pressure and potentially leading to unintended vehicles movement.
Ram truck investigation triggered after 14 complaints and six reported injuries
The NHTSA says it has received 14 vehicle-owner complaints and six reports of death and injuries through its Early Warning Program, all following the original Ram truck recall remedies.
Although no fatalities have been reported, the incidents underscore the need for further investigation into the BTSI system’s effectiveness and any underlying causes of the rollaway incidents.
The vehicles involved include the Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 models, covering both regular and heavy-duty versions.
The investigation is ongoing, and no new recall has been issued as of now. The NHTSA says its efforts aim to identify any additional root causes affecting the BTSI system and ensure the safety of Ram truck owners.
Ram has not yet announced any specific corrective measures, as the investigation is still in progress. The company is likely to await the findings of the NHTSA’s investigation before deciding on any further action.

Earlier this year, FCA US — Ram’s parent company — agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain Ram trucks are equipped with defective anti-lock braking systems and brake hydraulic control units.
