Two New York women claim that Pret A Manger’s sandwiches and baked goods contain traces of a synthetic biocide – glyphosate.
According to the Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit, plaintiffs Samara Daly and Linda Virtue paid a premium for bread and other baked goods sold by the restaurant chain.
They say they purchased these products based on marketing that claimed the food was “natural.”
“Pret A Manger produces sandwiches, baked goods, and other prepared foods that are sold to consumers through Pret A Manger’s retail outlets or restaurants and are advertised and promoted as ‘Natural Food,’” alleges the Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit.
“In contrast to Pret A Manger’s representations, certain food items sold at its retail outlets contain glyphosate, a synthetic biocide suspected, including by consumers, to have detrimental health effects.”
The Pret A Manger class action lawsuit alleges that the company’s Harvest Oatmeal Raisin Cookie and Egg Salad and Arugula Sandwich, along with other products made with the company’s 9-Grain Granary Bread contain traces of the synthetic biocide, despite being marketed as “natural.”
“By deceiving consumers about the nature, quality, and/or ingredients of the Products, Pret A Manger is able to sell a greater volume of the Products, to charge higher prices for the Products, and to take away market share from competing products, thereby increasing its own sales and profits,” allege the plaintiffs in the Pret A Manger sandwich class action lawsuit.
Each of the women allege they purchased a Pret A Manger product based on advertising claims that the products were “natural.”
Virtue purchased an egg salad sandwich, while Daly says she bought multiple Harvest Cookies from the company.
The Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit alleges that the company touts itself as a purveyor of “Natural Food” at its locations, including on signs, employee uniforms, cups and napkins.
“Pret A Manger’s representations are intended to, and do, portray to consumers that, at the very least, the ingredients in its products do not contain synthetic ingredients or chemicals,” claims the Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit.
However, the Pret A Manger class action lawsuit contends that independent testing of the company’s products revealed the presence of glyphosate.
“Glyphosate was invented by the agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation Monsanto, which began marketing the herbicide in 1974 under the trade name Roundup, after DDT was banned,” alleges the Pret A Manger class action contending that the chemical is not “natural.”
According to the plaintiffs in the Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit, the company is a “trusted expert in the production of ‘Natural Foods.’”
The plaintiffs say that they and other consumers relied on that expertise when deciding to purchase Pret A Manger products.
However, Pret A Manger chose to deceive customers when they knowingly included glyphosate in some of their products, the Pret A Manger class action states.
The Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide Class, as well as a New York subclass, of consumers who purchased Pret A Manger products.
The Pret A Manger glyphosate class action lawsuit is seeking damages as well as injunctive relief.
The lead plaintiffs are represented by Kim E. Richman of the Richman Law Group.
The Pret A Manger Glyphosate Class Action Lawsuit is Daly, et al. v. Pret A Manger Ltd., et al., Case No. 1:18-cv-05368, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
