Pressure cooker steel explosion burnsA growing number of pressure cooker accidents are leading to individuals filing product liability lawsuits against the manufacturers of these allegedly labor-saving kitchen appliances.

If there are design or manufacturing defects in one of these appliances, the likelihood of them leading to seriously injurious pressure cooker accidents can be great.

How Pressure Cookers Work

Whether they are stove-topped based or stand-alone units with their own heating elements, pressure cookers heat water to create steam inside of their pots.

This steam is not allowed to escape the unit and continues to build up, raising the pressure inside. The increase in pressure also increases the chamber temperature and rapidly cooks whatever is placed there, whether it be potatoes, lentils, or vegetables for soup.

The two cooking features–high pressure and scalding hot temperatures—are ingredients for disaster should there be an unknown defect in a unit. Pressure cooker accidents have been reported largely in conjunction with exploding lids or lids whose safety mechanisms did not work, preventing proper de-pressurization of contents prior to removing the lid.

The consequences of the latter problem can be flying, super-heated food. The reported pressure cooking accidents can lead to first, second, and third-degree burns.

The burns can be mildly to extremely disfiguring depending upon the degree of malfunction and whether they were caused by steam that the lid failed to trap inside the chamber in a fail safe manner or whether they were caused by spewing, scalding, food.

Brands Under Investigation for Causing Pressure Cooking Accidents

At this point, there is one class action lawsuit in federal court concerning Tri-Star pressure cookers. This pressure cooker lawsuit was initiated by three plaintiffs alleging that their pressure cooker and other units made by this manufacturer has a design defect. The design defect supposedly allows for removal of the lid while significant steam pressure is still built up in the drum of the appliance.

The three plaintiffs claim that this defect led to an injurious situation in their kitchens, in which they were all seriously burned by food flying out of the pressure cooker unexpectedly. There has been an individual lawsuit against Tri-Star, and one against Wolfgang Puck’s pressure cooker and one against Maxi-Matic’s Pressure Cooker as well.

There have been several brands of these kitchen appliances implicated in reports of pressure cooking accidents. These brands are currently under investigation and consumers should be on the alert:

  • Aldi
  • Crofton
  • Cuisinart
  • Maxi-Matic
  • Tri-Star
  • Wolfgang Puck
  • Other Unnamed Brands

Pressure cooking accidents with these brands have been reported, and opportunity exists to file a product liability lawsuit or join a class action lawsuit if you have been injured in any way.

Even if you did not suffer an injury, you may also qualify to regain the money you initially invested in your appliance or in having it repaired. In addition, you should be able to get compensation to pay any medical bills that you have incurred as a result of injury.
