While Bayer Healthcare’s Essure device has become a popular form of permanent, non-surgical birth control, a growing number of patients are reporting major problems with Essure implants.
Indeed, patients have reported a number of problems with Essure implants, including but not limited to bloating, rashes, excessive bleeding, allergic reactions, organ perforation, pelvic pain, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.
If you or someone you love has suffered from complications due to problems with Essure implants, you may be able to pursue litigation.
Basics of Essure Birth Control
The popular Essure birth control device is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. So far, hundreds of thousands of people have been implanted with the Essure device.
The Essure birth control system is made up of two metal coils lined with a thin fabric. In an outpatient procedure, the metal coils are placed in a woman’s fallopian tubes.
After the initial procedure, it takes a few months for the coils to become effective. Time is required for the coils to expand and for the surrounding tissue to grow in around them, blocking the fallopian tubes and preventing pregnancy.
Bayer HealthCare advertises Essure as a safe and effective form of permanent birth control. A draw for Essure sterilization users is that the device does not require surgery to implant, and in fact can be implanted in a doctor’s office in a simple outpatient procedure.
Indeed, Essure sterilization was initially considered a breakthrough for those who wanted a permanent birth control option.
In the years since its initial approval, around 750,000 women have so far chosen Essure as their form of permanent birth control. However, more than 4,500 adverse event reports have been filed with the FDA over major complications associated with use of the device.
Problems with Essure Implants
Thousands of women have reported problems with Essure implants including organ perforation, excessive bleeding, rashes, miscarriage, and ectopic pregnancy, among a variety of others. Some patients who suffer from these kinds of complications require removal surgery, but removal surgery can carry its own risks.
Essure users claim that they were not given adequate warning about these potential Essure side effects, and some have turned to litigation against Bayer HealthCare, the device’s manufacturer.
Filing an Essure Lawsuit
Hundreds of Essure users have filed litigation against Bayer HealthCare, alleging that Bayer failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about these major problems with Essure.
Plaintiffs allege that, had they been adequately informed of these complications, they would never have been implanted with an Essure birth control device in the first place and avoided these risks altogether.
If you or someone you love has suffered from complications from the Essure device, you may be able to file an Essure birth control lawsuit against Bayer HealthCare. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by side effects of Essure, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
