Stellantis has initiated a recall of more than 219,000 Dodge Journey SUVs and Ram ProMaster vans due to a defect in the rearview camera system. The issue, which affects the visibility of the rearview camera image, poses an increased risk of crashes.
The recall was announced following a safety notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Aug. 26.
The Ram Promaster recall involves 141,906 Ram ProMaster vans manufactured between May 2019 and November 2021 and the Dodge recall involves 77,671 Dodge Journey SUVs produced from May 2019 to December 2020.
The defect stems from potential cracks in the microprocessors, leading to a loss of the rearview camera image, which could display as a blank, black, or blue screen.
Rearview camera defect increases crash risk, recall says
The recall notice highlights the critical nature of the rearview camera defect, emphasizing the heightened risk of back-over crashes if the camera fails during reverse maneuvers.
“If the driver does not heed the blank/black/blue or inverted screen warning and fails to otherwise make sure it is safe to operate the vehicle in reverse, a vehicle crash can occur,” the NHTSA says in the recall notice.
Rearview cameras have been a federally mandated safety feature since 2018, underscoring the importance of this Dodge recall.
Stellantis has committed to notifying affected vehicle owners by mail, with interim letters expected to be sent by September 30. The company will replace the faulty rearview cameras at no cost to the owners.
“The only remedy for the issue is a rearview camera with a different design,” the recall notice says.
In addition to the free camera replacement, Stellantis is taking proactive steps to ensure customer safety. Owners of the affected vehicles are encouraged to contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403, referencing recall number 59C, for further details.
Customers can also reach out to the NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit the NHTSA website to check their vehicle identification number for more information.
