A woman has sued Johnson & Johnson, alleging that her daily use of Baby Powder and Shower to Shower since 1992 caused her ovarian cancer.
Lynn C. said that she has been using Baby Powder and Shower to Shower as feminine hygiene. She alleges she did not know that both products contain talc powder, a known carcinogen. Lynn was reportedly diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 14, 2012.
A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals. If a substance is known to promote or aggravate cancer, but not necessarily cause cancer, it may also be called a carcinogen.
According to the baby powder lawsuit, Lynn would have never used the products if she was made aware of the dangers associated with them. Because of her ovarian cancer, Lynn has incurred medical costs, lost wages and experience pain and suffering.
Baby Powder Medical Findings
A study conducted by Dr. Margaret A. Gates and funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health, focused on ovarian cancer and the use of talcum powder, found a 36 to 41 percent increase in ovarian cancer related to use of talc. The study advised women to immediately stop using the product.
Additionally, the journal Cancer Prevention Research published a report based on data collected from about 2,000 women. The study found that women who regularly use powder containing talc may have a 20 percent to 30 percent greater risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Lynn is suing Johnson & Johnson for failing to warn, negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty and civil conspiracy. She is seeking a judgment of at least $350,000 and other costs and relief that the court may deem just.
