Airbag explodes on steering wheelThere have been several vehicles linked with the potentially hazardous and fatal Takata airbag system, leading to a long Takata airbag recall list.

Millions of vehicles were shipped with a potentially defective Takata airbag system. You can veiw a list of the affected vehicles on our Defective Airbag Recall investigation page. The current investigation is looking for individuals who suffered injuries when their airbags failed to deploy or when their airbags excessively exploded.

Takata’s Defective Airbag System

Takata Corporation, the airbag manufacturer based in Japan, made a recent announcement that it was expanding on a previous 34-million vehicle recall list on Jan. 8, 2018. The company decided to add 3.3 million vehicles to the list involving vehicles with the defective airbag.

The vehicles included as part of the Takata airbag recall list have been found to have a very small but potentially fatal flaw. The defective airbag has been found to cause both drivers and passengers serious injuries and fatalities when airbags explode with excessive force. The defect has affected dozens of auto manufacturers and led to a long Takata airbag recall list.

According to reports, the airbags cause serious harm because they fail to offer protection, instead harming drivers and passengers. Regulators say that the airbag defect is linked to faulty inflators.

According to regulators, the airbag inflator, which is typically made up of a metal cartridge loaded with a propellant, should normally inflate with just enough force. Takata-made ammonium nitrate airbags inflate with too much force and explode much more forcibly rather than just expanding, causing serious injuries and harm.

The propellant chemical used in the Takata airbags is ammonium nitrate, which allows an airbag to inflate in milliseconds. However, this chemical can be rendered unstable as it degrades.

The inflation component of an airbag includes a propellant and metal cartridge. The defective airbags reportedly inflate with so much form that the metal cartridge holding the propellant ruptures. This causes the metal cartridge inside to explode. This explosion can cause metal shrapnel to fly throughout a vehicle, injuring passengers and drivers alike, leading to deadly consequences.

There have been 11 deaths and 1,880 injuries over the last couple years because of the Takata defect airbag system, reports suggest. Indeed, those who have been injured because of defective Takata-made ammonium nitrate airbags are filing lawsuits against Takata and the vehicle’s manufacturers.

The accusations against auto manufacturing companies being alleged by plaintiffs include that the company failed to warn them about the serious injuries and risks associated with the Takata airbag system. Plaintiffs suggest that auto manufacturers knew about the defective airbags for some time.

If you were affected by a defective Takata airbag, whether due to an airbag explosion or failure to deploy, you may be able to take part in the current defective airbag recall investigation and may be eligible for compensation. Although the filing of a Takata airbag lawsuit may not remove any pain and suffering caused by the defect, it may help remove some of the financial burden associated with auto repair and medical expenses.

  2. Thomas Park says:

Why is it so difficult to determine if your vehicle is included in the airbag problem? There are all kinds of lists but impossible to determine if your model is included. There appears that auto makers feel that they have no responsibility to inform auto owners and hope that they can get by if accidents are not catastrophic.
