Families consisting of a couple with a double income and no kids, also known as DINKs, on average make six figures with a median net worth of more than $200,000.
In addition to DINKs, there are a number of similar variations, including DINKWADs (double income with no kids but with a dog) and SINKs (a single-income couple with no kids), Business Insider reports.
The DINK lifestyle reportedly pays off for couples, purportedly allowing them more financial stability, the ability to travel and the ability to forgo costs associated with raising children.
Around 5% of the U.S. population consists of cohabiting couples who do not live with a child younger than 18, while around 29% of the population is made up of married couples who do not live with a minor child, according to a 2022 American Community Survey.
Older population increasingly child-free, U.S. Census Bureau study finds
In addition to couples in general, a recent study conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau found the older population in the United States is increasingly child-free, with more than 1 in 7 women between the ages of 40 and 44 being childless.
The figure is an increase from the 1 in 10 women in that age bracket who were reportedly without children in 1976, Business Insider reports.
Millennial women in general reportedly do not believe it would be worth it to have children given the economic struggles they lived through, with a Pew survey conducted in October 2021 finding 44% of nonparents between the ages of 18 and 49 saying they were either not likely or not at all likely to ever have kids.
The average median salary of DINKs is $250,600, according to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, far greater than any other type of family structure tracked by the survey, Business Insider reports.
The U.S. Census Bureau previously made headlines in September after releasing data showing child poverty increased in the wake of the end of pandemic-era government benefits.
