Nissan North America is recalling 24,000 model year 2019-2020 Nissan Leaf electric vehicles over concerns their battery could overheat, posing a fire risk.

The recall involves certain model year 2019-2020 Nissan Leaf vehicles equipped with a Level 3 quick charging port.

The automaker is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with quick-charge lithium-ion batteries that may overheat during Level 3 quick charging, according to the Nissan recall.

“A quick charging battery that overheats increases the risk of a fire,” the Nissan recall says

Affected Leaf owners advised not to use Level 3 quick charging prior to recall remedy

Nissan advises affected vehicle owners not to use Level 3 quick charging until the issue is fixed. The automaker said it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers update the battery software, free of charge.

The automaker said it plans to notify affected vehicle owners about the safety risk via letter in mid-October, followed by a second notice to be sent in November once the remedy becomes available.

Individuals with more questions about the Nissan recall may contact the automaker directly by phone at 1-800-867-7669 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Nissan issued a separate recall for more than 66,000 model year 2018-2023 Nissan Leaf vehicles last year over concerns they could accelerate unexpectedly if the driver changes the driving mode after disengaging cruise control.
