NFL Concussion SettlementAfter an NFL concussion settlement was recently reached, specialized lawyers are reaching out to retried professional football players who may have suffered from a concussion or head injury while playing for an NFL team.

The NFL concussion settlement could potentially provide up to $5 million to retired NFL players who have allegedly suffered brain damage injuries in result of the head injuries they incurred while playing the sport.

The neurological diseases and cognitive impairment conditions associated with the NFL concussion settlement includes:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
  • Dementia
  • Memory Loss
  • Parkinson’s Disease

Overview of NFL Concussion Settlement

According to the NFL concussion settlement, over 130 NFL players and other “friends of the Court” had filed pleas to the Supreme Court filing for medical cost damages.

The NFL concussion settlement alleges that thousands of former NFL players will likely suffer from the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), due to the injuries they received on the field.

CTE is a degenerative brain disease that is caused by repetitive head trauma, which can develop into memory loss, depression, and dementia.

Several former NFL players named in this settlement could benefit greatly from the payout, as they can finally receive the medical compensation they need.

Former New England Patriots player Tony Gaiter, cannot drive a car or hold down a steady job due to the severe depression he suffers. Gaiter also seems to have lost his interest in life, with friends and family indicate his condition continues to get worse.

The NFL concussion settlement alleges that his condition is directly caused by CTE, and is therefore eligible for compensation under the terms of the settlement. Initially, scientists believed that CTE was only caused by violent collisions to the head.

However, a recently study conducted at Boston University’s Center for the Study of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, had found that 90 out of 94 brains from deceased former NFL players had tested positive for CTE. According to the study, 40% of the brains in the study had belonged to former offensive and defensive linebackers.

Due to the brunt of physical force they take during games, linemen may be at the most risk for CTE and other brain related injuries.

In addition, the NFL concussion settlement also alleges these athletes were unfairly treated and had received insufficient medical care.

The NFL Concussion settlement was approved by the U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in April 2015, calling the settlement “fair and reasonable.

According to specialized attorneys familiar with the NFL concussion settlement, a lawyer with a strong understanding of this settlement could be the difference between getting the maximum payout available or being denied completely.

Former NFL players or their loved ones can contact a specialized lawyer to determine their eligibility for legal action.
