Over 1.3 million vehicles were initially recalled for a GM power steering defect, and tens of thousands more have since been recalled.
The GM power steering defect has reportedly also affected 6,280 police cars, which GM recalled specifically.
According to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, the police cars affected by this widespread GM power steering defect are 2014-16 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit cars.
The police vehicles suffered from a GM power steering defect where the electric power steering assist can be lost due to corrosion on the torque sensor connector. This defect makes manual steering more difficult, which can increase the risk of an accident.
Dealerships will replace the necessary steering gear assembly free of charge.
GM reports that no accidents or injuries have been reported in regards to the recall of these police vehicles.
GM Vehicles Affected
The initial GM power steering defect recall, announced in March 2014, involved vehicles including the Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy HHR, and Chevy Cobalt.
According to that GM power steering defect announcement, the electric power steering (EPS) systems in these vehicles is defective, and may fail at any given time while a person is driving.
The GM power steering defect recall has since been updated to include a few more vehicles with the same EPS problem: the 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 models, as well as the 2014-16 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit vehicles.
The EPS capabilities have had a variety of problems. GM has replaced the EPS motor, the EPS motor controller, or the torque sensor depending on the model of the vehicle affected. In this new addition to the recall, the torque sensor is the root of the problem.
As knowledge of the GM power steering recall and other defect recalls gains traction, some vehicle owners allege that GM failed to recall its vehicles over defects in a timely manner.
Various GM recall lawsuits allege that the company covered up ignition, airbag, and power steering defects in dozens of GM models, and placing customers at significant increased risk.
GM Recalls
One GM recall came after an ignition switch defect, which causes engines to turn off when the ignition turns from on to off. According to customers, this is a dangerous defect, since it can be triggered simply by bumping the keys when they are in the ignition.
The GM airbag recall applies to two airbag defects. The first is a problem with a side-impact airbag, which prevents these airbags from deploying due to a wiring harness problem.
The second airbag problem is with the frontal airbag software, which may prevent the frontal airbags from deploying in a crash.
The GM power steering defect, which causes the power steering to suddenly fail during use, has been the cause of a recall of over 1.3 million vehicles.
