Mazda has recalled more than 171,000 of its 3s and CX-30s vehicles due to a defect that can deactivate the airbags, stopping them from opening during a crash.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on May 29. It applies to 171,412 cars from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The recall is split between 51,857 Mazda 3 sedans and hatchbacks and 119,555 CX-30 crossovers.
According to the recall, the issue can be caused if the battery becomes completely depleted by leaving the ignition switch in the “On” position, and the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor unit stores an “internal fault.”
If the battery is recharged and the vehicle is turned back on after being depleted, the airbag warning light will turn on in the instrument cluster and keep the airbags from deploying, the recall notice states.
Mazda to provide fix under warranty, recall says
Mazda said it has not had any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Mazda will fix the issue by reprogramming the existing airbag sensor unit with improved hardware or replacing the unit with a newer one, the recall states.
Owners of affected models will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their vehicles to a Mazda dealer to perform the fix. All affected vehicles should still be under full warranty coverage. Owner notification is expected to be completed by the end of July.
In May, Mazda agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that its Mazda Connect infotainment system is defective and causes technical glitches.

I had a 2024 CX-30. I was in an accident (July 6th 2025) and the air bags did not deploy. I was not informed of this recall until July 28th. I’ve tried to file the claim but the VIN is not found. Why does the article mention that CX-30s are part of the recall but within the document to file a claim CX-30 appear ineligible?
Please help my air bags and seat belt malfunctioned in my Mazda CX 50. I hit a deer very hard airbags never helped me back. The light was on that it was malfunctioned it’s been going on in other models. I got seriously hurt in this accident please help it was a 2023 Mazda CX 50.
In 2017 I was in a accident and had hit someone who pulled out Infront of me. My air bags didn’t deploy at that time there was a lawsuit going I guess but no my attorney didn’t mention anything about it. I was going 35 miles and I hit really hard. I feel like my case would of been a perfect case to sue why is that with the attorney nobody took action
And can I still take action. When it was not my fault. There’s more but I’ll save it for someone who can help
I just had my infotainment center replaced. What I’m not happy about is that 1. They make you pay for the repair, then you have to file for a refund (just did this today). And 2. I was quoted a certain price, but once the work was done, they tried to charge me an additional 200.00 for labor! I told them that I was not informed of this and I wasn’t sure that I would be reimbursed for labor. They eventually took off the additional labor fee. I wonder how many people paid it, then were not reimbursed?
These modules are currently on back order. My local dealer tried to hold my car until january when the part would come in. Brought it in for a totally unrelated defect which they fixed.
You’ve got to be kidding
