Mercedes-Benz has recalled certain 2021-2023 S580 and Maybach S580 vehicles as a software issue may cause the engine to overheat or stall.
The Mercedes-Benz software recall was published to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Sept. 20. It applies to 27,190 vehicles.
According to the recall, in the event of a mechanical failure in the engine Camtronic system, the engine control unit software may cause the engine to overheat or stall.
“An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash,” the Mercedes-Benz recall says. “In addition, an engine that overheats can increase the risk of a fire.”
Free software replacement offered as fix for Mercedes-Benz recall
Dealers will replace the software free of charge, Mercedes-Benz said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by Nov. 26, 2024.
Mercedes-Benz said it was aware of 48 warranty field reports received between Aug. 11, 2021, and Aug. 29, 2024, as well as one potentially-related fire claim in the United States.
The automaker is not aware of any cases of injury, death or crashes related to the software issue, it said. Mercedes-Benz is not currently facing a class action lawsuit over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in legal action.
Last month, Mercedes-Benz asked a Georgia federal court to dismiss a class action lawsuit accusing the automaker of failing to disclose a wheel configuration defect allegedly present on some of its S580 sedans.
