Mercedes-Benz class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Natalie Bolling has filed a class action lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz.
  • Why: Mercedes-Benz allegedly manufactures vehicles with panoramic sunroofs that spontaneously shatter.
  • Where: The Mercedes-Benz class action lawsuit was filed in Georgia federal court.

Mercedes-Benz panoramic sunroofs are prone to spontaneously shattering under normal driving conditions, creating a dangerous situation for drivers, according to a class action lawsuit filed Feb. 14 in Georgia federal court.

Plaintiff Natalie Bolling says she purchased a Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a defective panoramic sunroof that spontaneously shattered. When she purchased the vehicle, she says she believed it would be safe, reliable and free of defects.

“The shattering events are typically sudden and loud, startling drivers who compare it to the sound of a gunshot or bomb, after which glass fragments rain down upon the occupants of the vehicle,” the class action lawsuit alleges.

This experience puts the vehicle occupants in a hazardous situation and increases the risk of a crash, Bolling says.

Panoramic sunroofs consist of a movable panel that opens like a window on the roof of the vehicle. Because they are significantly larger than typical sunroofs, they pose significant engineering challenges. Mercedes-Benz allegedly failed to meet the challenges posed by panoramic sunroof design and sold vehicles with shatter-prone panoramic sunroofs, Bolling says.

Mercedes-Benz class action says automaker knew of sunroof defect but failed to warn consumers

The automaker has allegedly known about the sunroof defect since at least 2011 but fails to warn consumers about the potential shattering risk associated with panoramic Mercedes-Benz sunroofs.

Bolling points to several reports on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, dating back as far as 2006, that describe incidents of Mercedes-Benz sunroofs spontaneously shattering.

Bolling notes other automobile manufacturers have also experienced issues related to shattering panoramic sunroofs. However, many of these companies have issued safety recalls or taken corrective action to address the issue, according to the Mercedes-Benz class action lawsuit.

The Mercedes-Benz class action lawsuit names the following vehicles as being equipped with potentially defective panoramic sunroofs:

  • 2011-present C-Class
  • 2014-present CLA-Class
  • 2011-present E-Class
  • 2011-present GL-Class/GLS-Class
  • 2011-present GLK-Class/GLC-Class
  • 2012-present M-Class/GLE-Class
  • 2-15-2017 Mercedes Maybach S-600
  • 2011-2012 R-Class
  • 2011-present S-Class
  • 2011-2019 SL-Class
  • 2013-2020 SLK-Class/SLC-Class

The Mercedes-Benz class action lawsuit asserts claims for breach of express warranty, breach of the implied warranty of merchantability, fraudulent concealment, unjust enrichment and violation of Alabama’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

Mercedes-Benz was hit with a class action lawsuit in November alleging it sold vehicles with defective M274 engines with pistons that prematurely fail, requiring a full engine replacement for which consumers were allegedly forced to pay out of pocket.

This past weekend on September 6, 2025, this happens to me. I have a 2017 SLC43 AMG that I just purchased in April. We were traveling on the highway and the sunroof disconnected from the passenger side flipping over to the driver’s side then coming back into the car before flying off. Thank God no one was hurt but this is something I’ve never seen happen in my life and the repair is going to be 5K!!! I feel this is a defect and should not have happened.

I am experiencing a some what same thing but with my rear windshield with Mercedes. It completely shattered in the heat while I’m at work. Glass still in tact footage to prove it. They are saying something hit it when I can bet my life nothing did. I wasn’t parked around any trees and I parked right in front of a camera. Keep in mind I do have a black Mercedes it gets really hot to the point I had a water bottle explode and my hand sanitizer. They said black cars typically get hot like that and it’s not their fault. I told them every time I got my car serviced about the bubbles on the back window appearing in my tint. And the trim from the sunroon keeps lifting. They want to charge me 3k to fix it. After quoting their price around 2k and someone did say it’s from heat pressure. I pray someone has experience in this because I feel they aren’t believing a word I say nor have they asked to see the pictures of the actual time it all happened. Stressing myself out trying to prove they are wrong.

I was driving on the highway and we heard a loud pop. There was nobody near us and we could not figure out what it was until we stopped and saw the plastic panel in front of the sunroof totally cracked. The shattered glass ran the entire width of the car. The dealership is claiming a rock did the damage, but we cannot find evidence of that. The dealership wants almost $2000 for the repair.

I had the same problem with my 2014 CLA Mercedes Benz and that Panoramic Sunroof flied off as I was traveling on the expressway. I just hear a loud sound that sounded like a big boom. I took car to the Mercedes Benz dealership and they said they had never seen this before. However, they presented me a bill for $1532 and this wasn’t even the labor charge added. This incident happened on April 26, 2025.

I own a Merceds Benz ML350 – the sunroof has exploded twice in this car, once in January 2023
and now again in August 2024. It sounds like a shotgun going off in the car. Both times Mercedes said there was probably a crack in the glass, not true and I have had to pay for both the glass in the install. Latest price $2200 for glass and $1800 to have it installed.
Both times the glass exploded from the outside.
Is there a Class Action Suit in Canada regarding this problem.
Mercedes takes no blame and gouges the consumer.
