Luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz has issued a recall over potentially deadly defects linked with the Takata airbag system used in some of its models. The Mercedes Benz airbag recall comes after Takata recalled its airbag system due to the risk of the airbag exploding with shrapnel. The defects have been connected with serious injuries and even fatalities.
Over the years, vehicles from a number of manufacturers have been equipped with Takata airbag systems. Unfortunately, these airbags have recently been found to be defective, placing car owners at risk. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles have been impacted by the Takata airbag recall.
Mercedes Benz Airbag Recall Basics
The front airbags in the vehicles included in these airbag recalls were found to have a potentially deadly defect. This recall and others like it focus on vehicles that use Takata-made ammonium nitrate-propelled airbags, which are reportedly capable of exploding rather than expanding, causing serious harm.
The problem has been linked with the airbag’s inflator component, which has a metal cartridge loaded with propellant. These defective airbags reportedly inflate much more rapidly than they should. The sheer force involved can cause the metal cartridge inside to explode, flinging metal shrapnel into the car and towards driver and passengers alike. Airbags are supposed to be life-saving devices, but this defect can turn them into what is essentially a life-threatening hazard.
Around 711,266 Mercedes Benz passenger vehicles were affected by the recall.
Takata Airbag Recall
Meredes Benz vehicles are not the only ones included affected by the Takata airbag recall. Models from Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep have also been recalled because of these risks. A list of vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recall can be found on our investigation page, which includes vehicles from 19 different automakers.
The defective Takata airbag system has been linked with over 1,880 injuries and 11 deaths in recent years.
A growing number of consumers who own vehicles involved in the recall have filed lawsuits against their car’s manufacturer and Takata itself, the airbag manufacturer. Takata filed bankruptcy earlier this year.
Plaintiffs in these actions believe automakers may have been aware of the dangerous defects linked with these Takata airbags for a significant period of time. However, many customers claim that their vehicle’s manufacturer failed to warn them about the serious risks associated with the airbag system.
