Has a Maryland toll violation cost you thousands of dollars in fees and interest?

The Maryland House Transportation Committee is considering giving the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) the power to forgive certain toll debts after hearing financially devastating stories from several toll road users.

In Maryland, motorists obtain an EZ Pass transponder that attaches to their car’s windshield. Each time the vehicle travels through the toll area, the transponder sends a signal to a database that records the moment and charges a fee for the toll. Motorists pay by either a checking account or a credit card that they authorize the toll system to use for this purpose.

Many drivers say the automated toll system on the InterCounty Connector (ICC) has failed to work properly.

According to an article by Maryland Reporter, John Sales of the MDTA said motorists who fail to pay a toll on the ICC through the electronic system will be hit with video toll fees.

A video toll is a minimum of $1, but a maximum of $15 above the base rate. Any outstanding toll fees that are paid within 30 days of receiving notice in the mail are considered closed cases. If payment is not received in full within 30 days, a $50 citation is added.

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration provides the MDTA with motorists’ addresses. The MDTA says they mail notifications anywhere from two weeks to 30 days.

A Maryland toll violation not paid within 30 days of notification can lead to further trouble. Motorists do have the option of challenging the fines and citations, but any Maryland toll violation not paid or challenged within 30 days will result in the vehicle being flagged for non-renewal of its registration.

Maryland Toll Violation Issues

Single mom Danielle H. told TheNewspaper.com she had no idea she owed any money until she received a whopping $14,000 bill for tolls from the state of Maryland. She insists she received no correspondence prior to that notice and that her EZ Pass account did not indicate any delinquency. She said authorities told her to make a down payment of $9,000 and follow that with five years of payments, which she says she could not afford to do. She allegedly filed for bankruptcy last year because of the Maryland toll violation.

Senator Roger Manno (D-Montgomery County) has introduced a bill that would authorize the MDTA to forgive debts of more than $300 if such debts are accrued within a 30-day period and under extenuating circumstances. He wants to offer reduced fines for 10,725 drivers who are facing $6.3 million in Maryland toll violations.

Senator Manno said when the video toll legislation was authorized, it was never the intent to force residents into bankruptcy.

If you have been a victim of an unfair Maryland toll violation, you could be eligible for compensation through legal representation.

Maryland should have never gotten rid of the cash booth option it’s like they knew what they were doing… each time you go thru they add a 25 dollar fine on top of your 6 dollars to go thru. There should be an option to pay cash they always had a cash option before. So why do away with cash option altogether. My tolls I only have 11 of them so tell me why do I owe over 600 dollars for 11 tolls……… Maryland is ripping us residents off and I’m sorry but there should be a law suite against them for TAKING away the cash booths that us residents have always had the option of using
