burning candle isolated on black backgroundAs the country was reeling from the emotional effects of yet another mass shooting last October—this one in the city of Las Vegas—monies started to pour in to assist surviving family members, the injured, and those that were struggling with the mental trauma of it all.

These monies were initially directed to a variety of intermediary organizations such as the Direct Impact Fund, the National Compassion Fund, and GoFundMe.com.

Over 90,000 people donated to the cause of Las Vegas victim compensation after the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival shooting at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. This tragedy left 58 people dead and injured hundreds of attendees.

The Las Vegas Victim’s Fund was set up to organize these donations from various sources and collect them into a single pool totaling $31.4 million, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. As of early March, it was hoped that all Las Vegas victim compensation would be complete by month’s end.

According to reports, administrators would rather avoid drawing it out in more than one distribution cycle. The Review-Journal says it was revealed that as of early March, Las Vegas victim compensation would be distributed to 532 claimants. More claimants might be added to the list once a verification process has been completed.

Las Vegas Victim Compensation Follows Past Post-Shooting Distribution Priorities

Because of the frequency of these mass shooting or other domestic terrorist events over the last few years, a specific protocol has been established for the distribution of Las Vegas victim compensation.

The vast majority of collected funds are given to the surviving family members of those killed in the event. These funds are designated to help them pay for funeral expenses and help replace the lost income of the decedent in the short-term. The monies are needed to support underage children and assist with the emotional and mental aftercare needed after trauma.

This same prioritization of post-tragedy fund disbursement was followed after the Orlando nightclub shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing in 2016 and 2013 respectively. When comparing these events, the Boston Marathon attack garnered $61 million in compassionate giving, the Orlando nightclub shooting $29.5 million, and the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival shooting $31.4 million.

The next priority in Las Vegas victim compensation is distributing the funds to the hundreds of injured—many of whom were blasted with massive medical bills after lengthy hospitalizations, physical and occupational therapy, and psychological counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

In addition to assisting with paying these medical bills, Las Vegas victim compensation helps many of the injured recoup income lost while recovering from their injuries. For those lucky enough to have savings, these monies might help rebuild their emergency nest egg. For those not so lucky, it can provide a welcome relief from the day-to-day financial insecurity.

Not all Las Vegas shooting victims qualify for compensation from the fund, and many have allegedly been denied compensation for not being harmed enough. Many more victims may qualify to bring a civil action in court. If you were inside the gates during the shooting, you may qualify to join an ongoing Las Vegas shooting legal investigation.
