New information has released indicating what happened inside the shooter’s hotel rooms. The Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage identifies the critical moments that occurred for police officers during and after the October 2017 mass shooting.
The gunman opened fire from his hotel room windows and ultimately killed 58 people and injured many more. The Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage from two different officers was released Wednesday after a lawsuit was brought forward from multiple news organizations requesting the release of bodycam footage, documents associated with the shooting, and 911 recordings.
Bodycam footage is relatively new in terms of being used as evidence in legal cases, especially in instances of mass shootings and other events. Initially, the police department in Las Vegas shared their concerns about releasing this information from the bodycam footage, which included many hours of the immediate response to the shootings.
According to NPR, the Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage released to the Associated Press includes the moments following when police entered the shooter’s hotel room on the 32nd floor of the hotel to identify that the 64-year-old gunman was dead from a gunshot he inflicted on himself.
The Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage indicates that the room was filled with semi-automatic rifles strewn about on a bathtub and on the floor. Multiple officers then walked around inspecting the room after they indicated the suspect was down.
The Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage also identifies that there was an intricate camera system set up inside the room so that he would be aware when officers were coming down the hallway. The officers identified more than 20 AR-10 and AR-15 style rifles in the adjoining rooms that were booked by the gunman at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.
The Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage also indicates the early confusion in the immediate moments after many reports of shots fired were linked to the police. The radio was busy immediately after these reports came in with police trying to narrow down the shooter’s location.
One voice on the Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage identifies that there was a rifle deployed near the front of Mandalay Bay. Law enforcement officials later conducted an investigation to identify that semi-automatic rifles were set up by the gunmen to fire in a manner similar to automatic weapons. Automatic weapons are rarely used in crimes and are tightly regulated.
The two videos released in the Las Vegas shooting bodycam footage are part of a bigger collection of more than two and a half hours of video information released following the Nevada Supreme Court’s decision to refuse a Las Vegas police request to delay the release.
