Knee Replacement Surgery That Needs Early Revision Surgery Could Qualify for LawsuitIf you have undergone knee replacement surgery and have needed revision surgery because of complications, you could be eligible for compensation through legal means.

Both the Arthrex iBalance and Exactech Optetrak knee implant systems have been found to cause unanticipated complications in knee replacement recipients.

Patients experiencing pain and swelling, mobility issues, infections, fractures and implant loosening might need revision surgery to correct these problems. An implant that becomes disassociated from its originally intended position or one that causes the kneecap to move out of place is apt to need revision surgery to resolve such issues.

Any patient who has undergone knee revision surgery to correct these complications could qualify to participate in a knee replacement surgery class action lawsuit.

Knee Replacement Surgery Problems

Nearly 4.4 million people in the United States have needed knee replacement surgery. Medical device companies compete for millions of dollars in revenue by claiming to offer the newest and the best knee implant system available.

The Arthrex iBalance TKA Tibial Tray is a component of the Arthrex iBalance Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) System. This particular system was intentionally designed to treat multi-compartmental knee cartilage degeneration suffered by patients diagnosed with either osteoarthritis or post-traumatic arthrosis.

The Arthrex iBalance TKA System was advertised as a superior option compared to conventional total knee replacement systems. Arthrex said that patients with their Arthrex iBalance TKA System would not see the need for subsequent surgeries to have metal plates and screws removed.

Arthrex recalled the iBalance TKA Tibial Tray in December 2015 because the components contained a smooth texture that was not compatible with previous parts that exhibited a rough texture. Patients reportedly have suffered complications and have needed revision surgery to correct the problems.

Patients also have reported problems with the Exactech Optetrak knee replacement system. The tibial insert reportedly wears too quickly, causing knee implant failure that leads to needed revision surgery.

In the June 2012 issue of Orthopaedics & Traumatology: Surgery & Research, researchers looked at 106 patients who had received a total of 110 Exactech Optetrak knee implant systems between 2005 and 2007.

Seventeen patients said they were disappointed or dissatisfied; 25 knees (22 percent) were causing so much pain that the patient reported taking painkillers on a regular basis. Twenty-five (22 percent) reported tibial implant loosening; and 24 (21 percent) exhibited patellofemoral conflict (issues where the back of the kneecap has contact with the thigh bone).

A follow-up of less than five years found nine incidents of tibial loosening that required knee revision surgery; three for patellofemoral instability; and one due to patellofemoral pain.

If you or someone you love has endured a revision of your knee replacement surgery due to the failure of either the Arthrex iBalance or Exactech Optetrak knee implant systems, you could be eligible for compensation through legal representation.
