Kia is recalling more than 137,000 model year 2021-2023 Kia Seltos and Soul vehicles over concerns they could suffer engine damage as a result of defective piston oil rings.

The recall involves certain Kia Seltos vehicles produced between July 2, 2020, and July 1, 2022, and certain Kia Soul vehicles produced between July 2, 2020, and April 19, 2022.

“Engine damage can cause a vehicle stall or fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the recall says.

Kia dealers to inspect, replace engines in recalled vehicles

Kia said it expects to mail owner notification letters by April 4, 2025, and plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers inspect and replace the engines in the recalled Seltos and Soul vehicles, free of charge.

The automaker will also be installing piston-ring noise sensing systems in the recalled Kia Soul and Seltos vehicles, according to the recall.

Individuals with more questions about the recall can contact Kia customer service via telephone at 800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

Kia issued a separate recall in January for more than 80,000 model year 2023-2025 Kia Niro EV, Kia Niro Hybrid and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles over concerns their front air bags and seat belts may improperly deploy.

  1. Cecilia Marie Shea says:

I took my 2021 Kia Saltos in for the recall and they said it was fine, a few months later my car stalled a few times on my way to work, and I barely got it to the dealership while it was still running. Now they say that it is the oil piston rings, but they’re not going to be responsible because I have incomplete Maintenance records.
Has anyone sued them? The class action lawsuit could take years
