Jeep fire class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Nikki Bell filed a class action lawsuit against FCA US LLC.
  • Why: Bell claims FCA Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles have a defect that can lead to a fire risk.
  • Where: The Jeep Wrangler fire class action was filed in Michigan federal court.

Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles from model years 2021-2023 have a defect that also poses a fire risk, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Nikki Bell filed the nationwide class action complaint against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA US LLC) on March 3 in Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

Bell alleges the Jeep vehicles have defective parts that increase the risk of a fire starting spontaneously, even when the vehicle is parked and not in use.

The Jeep fire class action lawsuit claims the defect is related to the power steering pump electrical connector, which can cause a thermal event leading to a fire.

Jeep fire defect caused at least one fatality, lawsuit alleges

The Jeep fire class action lawsuit alleges the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the issue in September 2024, which was prompted by multiple reports of engine compartment fires in Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles.

The lawsuit also claims at least one fatal accident was caused by a vehicle fire due to the defect.

The Jeep fire class action lawsuit alleges FCA was aware of the defect based on consumer complaints and communications with NHTSA, but concealed the issue from consumers at the time of sale or lease.

Bell claims if she and other class members had known about the defect, they would not have purchased or leased the vehicles or would have paid less for them.

As a result, she says owners and lessees of the affected vehicles have suffered a loss of money, property and/or value of their vehicles.

The lawsuit seeks to represent all persons in the United States who purchased or leased a 2021 through 2023 model-year Jeep Wrangler JL or Jeep Gladiator vehicle.

It asserts claims for breach of implied warranty of merchantability, violation of the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, unjust enrichment and violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

The lawsuit seeks certification of the class action, damages, attorney fees and costs and a jury trial.

A separate Jeep fire class action lawsuit has been filed targeting the 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler, 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator, and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee models.
