'Diabetes' highlighted in orangeA new study, following recent FDA warnings about diabetes medication side effects suggests that type-1 diabetes patients may face an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis after using Invokana.

The diabetes medication study published in the medical journal Diabetes Care comes following recent warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that type-2 diabetics may also have an increased risk of acid build up in the blood following Invokana use.

According to the diabetes study, Invokana can slightly increase the risk of ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition caused by high acid levels in the blood. Diabetic ketoacidosis can result in some serious symptoms.

Diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness

These diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms can often require urgent medical treatment, and can even result in major health problems. Although the increased risk is fairly low, the condition can result in severe health complications, even involving emergency hospital treatment.

Invokana (canaglifolozin) belongs to a new class of drugs approved to treat type-2 diabetes. Invokana and others in its class inhibit some kidney functions in order to increase glucose production, lowering blood glucose levels.

While Invokana is only officially approved to treat type-2 diabetes, it is often prescribed “off-label” to those with type-1 diabetes. While the drug maker has tried to receive approval for Invokana to treat type-1 diabetes patients, the request has so far not been granted.

According to the study findings, type-1 diabetes patients taking Invokana saw a 0.4 percent drop in glycated haemoglobin compared to the placebo group. Most of these patients neither lost nor gained weight.

However, patients taking Invokana at the 100 mg dosage experienced a 5.4 percent rate of ketone-related Invokana side effects, including ketoacidosis.

Patients taking the higher dosage (300 mg) experienced an even higher rate of side effects at 9.4 percent.

These findings may provide additional evidence toward the recent link between Invokana and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Invokana Diabetic Ketoacidosis Lawsuits

Many consumers, amid the FDA warnings and recent studies, are pursuing Invokana lawsuits. These plaintiffs allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn about potential Invokana side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis.

These Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuits claim that the drug makers actively withheld information about the drug’s risks from both the medical community and the general public. Some of these Invokana lawsuits claim that the potential Invokana risks, including diabetic ketoacidosis, may outweigh the benefits.

Plaintiffs involved in these Invokana lawsuits hope to gain some kind of financial compensation.

Similar allegations have been brought up against Farxiga, Xigduo XR, and Jardiance, among others.

If you or someone you know has suffered from significant side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis, from Invokana or a similar diabetes medication, you may be able to file a diabetes medication side effects lawsuit.

Pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages, as well as emotional and physical suffering.

In general, diabetes medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
