Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 130,000 Santa Fe vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a risk of electrical fires.
The recall, reported on Oct. 2, affects 135,386 cars, which may have an improperly installed B+ positive terminal cover on the starter motor assembly. This defect could result in an electrical short during a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Hyundai estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles may have this defect. The company has not received any reports of crashes, injuries or fatalities linked to this issue.
The recall notice emphasizes the potential danger posed by the improperly installed terminal cover, which could lead to an electrical short and subsequent fire risk.
“An electrical short increases the risk of a fire,” the recall notice states.
Hyundai addresses potential fire hazard in Santa Fe models
Hyundai plans to notify affected vehicle owners by mailing notification letters on Dec. 1, 2025. Vehicle identification numbers involved in the recall became searchable on the NHTSA website as of Oct. 4.
To address the issue, Hyundai is offering free inspections and repairs at its dealerships. The company has taken steps to ensure that the affected vehicles are remedied according to the manufacturer’s instructions, preventing any further risk of electrical fires.

Hyundai says it has not received any reports of injuries or accidents related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier, Hyundai announced a recall of nearly 600,000 vehicles, including 568,580 Palisade SUVs from model years 2020 to 2025 and certain IONIQ 6 EVs, due to seat belt buckles that may fail to latch properly.
