Kia recall overview:

  • Who: Kia America is recalling more than 80,000 model year 2023-2025 Kia Niro EV, Kia Niro Hybrid and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the front air bags and seat belts in the recalled vehicles may improperly deploy.
  • Where: The recall affects consumers nationwide.

Kia America issued a recall for more than 80,000 model year 2023-2025 Kia Niro EV, Kia Niro Hybrid and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles over concerns their front air bags and seat belts may improperly deploy.

The automaker said it is concerned the floor wiring beneath the passenger seat of the recalled Kia Niro vehicles could become damaged, either preventing the front air bags and seat belts from deploying properly or causing an “unintended side curtain air bag deployment.”

“Air bags and seat belts that deploy improperly or an air bag deploying unintentionally can increase the risk of injury in a crash,” the Kia recall says.

Kia dealers to install wiring covers in recalled Kia Niro vehicles

Kia said it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers install wiring covers and inspect, replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly as necessary for the recalled Kia Niro vehicles, free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 14, 2025, according to the Kia Niro recall.

Individuals with more questions about the recall can contact Kia by phone at 1-800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Kia issued a separate recall in January for more than 74,000 Sorento vehicles over concerns a software issue could cause a loss of low beam headlights and taillights.

My daughter bought a kia niro 22 and it’s been in the shop 4 or so times due to the battery not able to charge or the car just shutting if loff, leaving her stranded, missing work, tow expenses. This last time it’s been in the shop for the same problem ans has not gotten it back because they haven’t fixed it. It’s been almost a year. How in the world is kia getting away with this. This time she altar got a paid rental but she’s still making the car payment on the kia she can’t use. So unfair, such a dangerous highway she has been stranded on by herself. Loss of income and havoc.
