Kia recall overview:

  • Who: Kia recalled more than 74,000 Sorento vehicles.
  • Why: A software issue may cause a loss of low beam headlights and taillights.
  • Where: The Kia recall is active in the United States.

Kia recalled more than 74,000 Sorento SUVs as a software issue may cause a loss of low beam headlights and taillights.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Jan. 13. It applies to 74,469 model year 2024-2025 Sorento, 2025 Sorento Hybrid, and 2025 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid vehicles.

According to the Kia recall, a software error in the body domain control unit of the affected vehicles may cause a loss of low beam headlights and taillights.

“A momentary loss of low-beam headlamp and tail lamp illumination may decrease visibility, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall says.

Kia will update vehicle software for free, recall says

The issue also means that the vehicles do not comply with federal requirements for motor vehicle safety. There have been no reported injuries related to the issue so far, and Kia is not facing legal action over the recall, although Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

To remedy the issue, Kia dealers will update the required software, free of charge.  Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Feb. 21.

Meanwhile, Kia has also issued a recall for nearly 23,000 of its model year 2024-2025 EV9 hybrid electric vehicles that may be missing seat bolts in their second- and/or third-row seats.

2016 Kia Sorrento went through multiple headlights per year because they just “stop” working purchasing each one at $60 a headlight. Also the lights are so dim at night I can’t see anything it is so hard to drive at night without my high beams on.

  4. Brandi jo Wheaton says:

My 2011 kia Sorento lights have gone so dim i have to have ppl check to see if they are on. My screen blinks, my reverse safety sound just goes off now the whole time when nothing is close at all. My truck just broke down monday as a matter of fact. My alternator isnt charging my battery and they are both only a little over a year old.

    1. Annamarie Christine Marrs says:

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento and I can barely see at night when My high beams aren’t on. It’s really scary for me to drive at night.
