Hyundai recalls, class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Consumers recently targeted Hyundai Motor America with two class action lawsuits. The automaker also issued two recalls. Additionally, a class of vehicle owners asked a federal judge to approve a class action settlement with Hyundai and Kia.
  • Why: The class action lawsuits involve alleged paint and headlight defects. The recalls address a fuel pump defect and a loss of motive power..
  • Where: Consumers nationwide drive Hyundai vehicles.

Consumers recently targeted Hyundai Motor America with a pair of class action lawsuits and agreed to a class action settlement with the company. The automaker also announced two recalls..

The class action lawsuits involve alleged paint and headlight assembly defects, while the class action settlement ended claims Hyundai and Kia sold vehicles with defects that made them vulnerable to theft.

Hyundai also issued recalls for concerns involving a fuel pump defect and a sudden loss of motive power for certain Hyundai Genesis vehicles and model year 2020 and newer Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles, respectively.

Hyundai recalls new Elantra, Venue, Kona vehicles over power loss defect

Hyundai issued a recall for 13,511 model year 2024 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles earlier this month over concerns they could experience a sudden loss of motive power due to a short circuit.

According to the recall notice, the automaker says it is concerned the can suffer an electrical short that potentially causes their malfunction indicator light to illuminate and/or the vehicle to suffer a sudden loss of motive power while in operation.

“Sudden, unexpected loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash, especially at high

speeds,” the recall notice states.

Hyundai recalls 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles over fuel pump concerns

Hyundai issued a recall for 31,440 of its 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles in April over concerns an impeller can become deformed under high heat, causing the fuel pump to shut down.

“A shutdown of the fuel pump could restrict fuel flow to the engine, resulting in a sudden reduction or loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Hyundai recall states.

The recall affects 12,763 model year 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 14,414 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2,899 2021-2023 Genesis G80 and 1,364 2022-2023 Genesis G90 vehicles.

Vehicles have improperly sealed headlight assemblies, class action claims

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the automaker sold newer Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade vehicles with improperly sealed headlight assemblies.

The lawsuit claims improper sealing on the headlight assemblies of the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles allowed moisture to enter the headlights, causing them to dim over time.

“The headlight defect endangers drivers, pedestrians and other vehicles because it makes accidents wherein the vehicle strikes a person, animal or object in the roadway more likely,” the Hyundai class action states.

The consumer claims Hyundai sent technical service bulletins to authorized repair facilities about the alleged defect but failed to inform consumers about it.

Class action says paint on Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens, peels off

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the paint and color coat on its Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens and peels off, causing pricey repair costs.

The class action lawsuit claims the defect is preventable and that many Genesis owners simply choose to live with the issue as it allegedly costs between $200 and $1,800 to fix the defect.

“Those who have complained on sites like genesisowners.com and carcomplaints.com have stated that they reported the clear coat/paint damage and related issues to defendant, only to be ignored and have to take care of the damage themselves, with defendant taking little to no responsibility,” the Hyundai class action states.

Drivers ask judge to approve $145M Kia, Hyundai theft settlement

A class of Hyundai and Kia drivers asked a federal judge in California last month to grant final approval of a $145 million settlement to resolve claims they sold vehicles containing defects that left them vulnerable to theft.

The settlement includes at least $80 million in compensation for drivers who suffered losses from car thefts or attempted car thefts and a free software upgrade that will prevent the vehicles from being able to start without a key present.

“The settlement offers significant relief to class members who will receive virtually all the relief that plaintiffs originally sought in this first-of-its-kind action,” class members write in a motion filed April 18.

2016 Hyundai Santa Fe started burning oil so bad it was choking anyone in car when windows were down..took in to dealer and they did oil consumption test. I was at 96,000+ miles. Drug out the tests until my car was near 100,000 miles. Said 1 qt oil every 1000 miles was normal. They totally “missed” the fact it was steadily using more and more oil because the engine was failing. Sure enough, at 106,000 miles, the car started smoking worse than ever, lost power and was running very rough while on highway. Towed to service station and was informed cylinder #4 had no compression and engine needed to be replaced. Hyundai would do NOTHING about it. It’s going to cost me $9000+ to replace. Had Hyundai appeal but all they did was go back to Suntrup Hyundai and confirm it’s not going to be fixed on their dime. Thanks for nothing Hyundai and Suntrup. You knew that engine was bad.

2017 santa fe sport has oil usage of over 1 quart every thousand miles..been doing this for over 50 000 miles but dealer did service and I didn’t discover it until I started doing service. Dealer is aware but says I have to pay 8 to 9 hundred dollars to do engine cleaning then do a consumption study then MAYBE they will file a claim

    1. Kim Cooper says:

      Hi Herman,
I have a 2017 Sonata and I’m experiencing the same thing, it’s been going on since 21, for about a year after oil changes I assumed the oil shops weren’t putting enough oil in my car, I’m having to top off every 1500 miles, do you know if there’s a recall for this problem.

2017 Elantra limited. Back driver side passenger door won’t open from the inside/ outside when unlocked. I’ve read this is a random occurrence.

    1. Ashley says:

I thought I was the only person that this happen too just one day went to go open the door and we couldn’t no longer open the door my baby car seat was on that side and started to think about all the things that could go wrong while this door wasn’t opening and it scared me to

My 2015 Hyundai Sonata has been in the Steele Hyundai shop in Houston Tx since January 02.2024 I had engin light come on and they said it was the VCM on motor but they have been unable to repair. The have caused issues that I didn’t have before like the engine knocking. I contacted headquarters about this and have had 2 caseworker working on situation but they tell me dealership won’t return their calls. I find this unacceptable for a dealership I didn’t put my car in a mom and pop shop or Joe’s garage I expected them to repair my vehicle. Do they not have qualified certified mechanics or they got them from labor pool

    1. Velvet says:

Did your car fall under the Engine recall? I have a 2012 and my motor was knocking then locked up. They replaced the motor. It took about 3 months, but they paid for a rental until mine was complete..

    2. Lee Sanchez says:

Hyundai needs to cut ties with Steele South Loop Hyundai. I had paint peeling issues and went there while under the paint warranty. Steele didn’t do anything. I contacted Hyundai corporate to create a case. Steele did reach out but never sent corporate what they requested. Armando Pena had the nerve to try and blame me. Asking if the vehicle had been wrecked. Corporate said they had no control over their dealerships and suggested I go elsewhere. I did go elsewhere and they got corporate what they needed and got my vehicle painted. However, corporate did not cover the repair at 100% since the paint warranty expired. What good is “America’s Best Warranty ” if it not honored?

I purchased a 2023 Hyundai ionic sel 9 mos ago. I have had three recalls and had to purchase a jumpstart for my 12 V battery that fails consistently. The dealership did a software update on my 12 V that did absolutely nothing to fix the situation.
