  • Where: Consumers nationwide drive Hyundai vehicles.

Consumers recently targeted Hyundai Motor America with a pair of class action lawsuits and agreed to a class action settlement with the company. The automaker also announced two recalls..

The class action lawsuits involve alleged paint and headlight assembly defects, while the class action settlement ended claims Hyundai and Kia sold vehicles with defects that made them vulnerable to theft.

Hyundai also issued recalls for concerns involving a fuel pump defect and a sudden loss of motive power for certain Hyundai Genesis vehicles and model year 2020 and newer Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles, respectively.

Hyundai recalls new Elantra, Venue, Kona vehicles over power loss defect

Hyundai issued a recall for 13,511 model year 2024 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles earlier this month over concerns they could experience a sudden loss of motive power due to a short circuit.

According to the recall notice, the automaker says it is concerned the can suffer an electrical short that potentially causes their malfunction indicator light to illuminate and/or the vehicle to suffer a sudden loss of motive power while in operation.

“Sudden, unexpected loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash, especially at high

speeds,” the recall notice states.

Hyundai recalls 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles over fuel pump concerns

Hyundai issued a recall for 31,440 of its 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles in April over concerns an impeller can become deformed under high heat, causing the fuel pump to shut down.

“A shutdown of the fuel pump could restrict fuel flow to the engine, resulting in a sudden reduction or loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Hyundai recall states.

The recall affects 12,763 model year 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 14,414 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2,899 2021-2023 Genesis G80 and 1,364 2022-2023 Genesis G90 vehicles.

Vehicles have improperly sealed headlight assemblies, class action claims

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the automaker sold newer Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade vehicles with improperly sealed headlight assemblies.

The lawsuit claims improper sealing on the headlight assemblies of the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles allowed moisture to enter the headlights, causing them to dim over time.

“The headlight defect endangers drivers, pedestrians and other vehicles because it makes accidents wherein the vehicle strikes a person, animal or object in the roadway more likely,” the Hyundai class action states.

The consumer claims Hyundai sent technical service bulletins to authorized repair facilities about the alleged defect but failed to inform consumers about it.

Class action says paint on Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens, peels off

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in March over claims the paint and color coat on its Genesis vehicles prematurely weakens and peels off, causing pricey repair costs.

The class action lawsuit claims the defect is preventable and that many Genesis owners simply choose to live with the issue as it allegedly costs between $200 and $1,800 to fix the defect.

“Those who have complained on sites like genesisowners.com and carcomplaints.com have stated that they reported the clear coat/paint damage and related issues to defendant, only to be ignored and have to take care of the damage themselves, with defendant taking little to no responsibility,” the Hyundai class action states.

Drivers ask judge to approve $145M Kia, Hyundai theft settlement

A class of Hyundai and Kia drivers asked a federal judge in California last month to grant final approval of a $145 million settlement to resolve claims they sold vehicles containing defects that left them vulnerable to theft.

The settlement includes at least $80 million in compensation for drivers who suffered losses from car thefts or attempted car thefts and a free software upgrade that will prevent the vehicles from being able to start without a key present.

“The settlement offers significant relief to class members who will receive virtually all the relief that plaintiffs originally sought in this first-of-its-kind action,” class members write in a motion filed April 18.

I have a 2014 hyundai sonata that at 30 000 miles had to be towed. Oil consumption, rough idle, replaced coil packs twice . Now at 74,000 miles it’s not drivable because it feels like 2 flat tires ( but they,re not ) and still rough, shaky idle , and strains when accelerating. I,m Senior on low fixed income and can,t afford the costly repairs so the car has been sitting in driveway. Also dealership tried to charge me when gas was pouring on the engine from faulty hose. I will never buy or recommend hyundai to anyone.

I have 2013 Hyundai sonata And the head light assembly got hot and melted so the head lights do not stay in place. They face the ground. You can not drive it at all at night.

My 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe engine kicked the bucket last summer…I kept the oil changed anf maintained maintenance regularly. One morning it started making a horrible noise and it broke down on me….never started back up again. Never had a warning light …no check oil or engine light. It was very high in miles at this point but never knew there was a problem until it broke down. I had to repo it and purchase another vehicle so apparently I owe the remaining due plus whatever the difference is for them to “fix” it and resell it.

  8. Melissa fowler says:

They should back those dates up a bit, I’ve gotta 05 and had to change two fuel pumps already, within a few years time, lose of power which generally can be a symptom of a bad fuel pump and yea the headlights suck if they’re not on bright you can barely tell you have any lights on at all.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra Limited that I purchased brand new in January of 2016. It’s the white pearl quartz paint that will bubble up and then peel off in sheets. Hyundai will not fix it I’ve been to multiple dealerships and contacted the Hyundai corporation to no avail!!!

I have same color 2018 santa fe sport and my paint has been doing the same. They told me there was nothing they can do except charge me to have it repainted. I have been a heavy equipment and heavy truck painter for over ten years. I call paint suppliers I have used for years to see how much the paint would cost and it was not cheap because of the shimmer flake they use. So I have had to put off painting it myself. For a car company that claims quality vehicles they sure have a lot of issues… Everything from junk engines , fuel pump issues to lack of security resulting in high number of thefts and crappy paint. There are still thousands of owners whose engines are bad and consuming 3 quarts of oil in less than 5 days or 300 miles that get told they have to pay $2000 + dollars in oil changes and engine flushing and finally an oil consumption test before they will even consider replacing the engine.
Even if the milage is below 50,000 miles. My wife was one of them and we told the finace company they can come get the car because we could not afford to keep putting 3-4 quarts of oil in it ever couple of days. Hyundia and Kia both need to be paying these people who have been forced to let their car go back because they don’t want to eat the cost of their screw ups. Not to mention the people who still have their vehicles and are having to spent hundreds of dollars a month to keep oil in their car because they can’t afford all the unnecessary oil changes and flush before they do a consumption test and even then is no guarantee that hyundia or Kia will even replace their faulty Motor.

  10. TINA M CARRASQUILLO says:

My 2024 kona limited with 2000 miles was completely dead one morning and had to be jumped. Brought to dealer and it had to stay overtime for a charge.
