Hyundai airbag recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai is recalling more than 49,000 model year 2024 Santa Fe vehicles, including both gasoline and hybrid models.
  • Why: Potential damage in the vehicles could cause inadvertent airbag deployment, or prevent airbags from deploying during a crash
  • Where: The Hyundai airbag recall is active in the United States.

Hyundai has recalled more than 49,000 model year 2024 Santa Fe and Santa Fe HEV vehicles, as potential damage in the vehicles’ main floor wire harness could cause the airbags to inflate inadvertently, or to not inflate during a crash.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on July 26. It applies to 40,144 gasoline-powered 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles and another 9,574 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid vehicles.

According to the recall, the main floor wire harness used in the subject vehicles could become damaged due to contact with the passenger-side, second-row bench seat’s folding hinge assembly.

A damaged main floor wire harness can result in illumination of the air bag warning light, inadvertent airbag deployment, or an inability to deploy the airbags during a crash, the recall states.

These issues could increase the risk of injury to drivers and vehicle occupants, Hyundai says.

“As a precaution, if any of the warning symptoms specified in this report are confirmed present in vehicle, owners are advised to visit a dealer immediately for diagnosis and repair as the recall remedy is currently available,” the recall says.

Free fix for affected drivers

Hyundai plans to have all owners of the subject vehicles notified by mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer to inspect and properly secure the wire harness.

If the wire harness damage is confirmed, the floor wire harness will be replaced with a new one, the recall says.

“This remedy will be offered at no cost to owners for all affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty,” it says.

Hyundai will also provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall issue. Owners will be notified by mail of the recall on Sept. 23.

Last month, Hyundai Motor America issued a recall for more than 50,000 vehicles over concerns they were equipped with fuel pumps that could fail, resulting in a loss of drive power. That recall involves certain model year 2019-2022 Hyundai Veloster N, 2019-2023 Genesis G70 and 2022-2023 Elantra N and Kona N vehicles.
