VW Audi Takata airbag recall dashboardA widespread Chevy Takata airbag recall has affected hundreds of thousands of vehicles from a variety of manufacturers including Chevrolet. All of these vehicles are installed with Takata airbags, which are reportedly defective and dangerous. Injuries from these defects can be dangerous or even, in the worst cases, fatal.

Chevy Takata Airbag Recall

The Chevy Takata airbag recall includes the following Chevrolet vehicles:

  • 2010-2013 Avalanche
  • 2010-2014 Silverado HD
  • 2010-2013 Silverado LD
  • 2010-2014 Suburban
  • 2010-2014 Tahoe

According to the Chevy Takata airbag recall, the front airbags in certain Chevrolet models were found to be defective in a way that places drivers and passengers at serious risk of injury or even death. Chevrolet and other automakers have recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles that use Takata-made airbags with ammonium nitrate propellant. The airbags can degrade over time, causing them to explode, which can injure or even killing the driver and passenger.

The problem has been linked with the airbag’s inflator, consisting of a metal cartridge loaded with propellant. Airbags are, of course, designed to inflate very quickly upon activation. However, these defective airbags do more than inflate quickly—they explode so rapidly and with such extreme force that the metal cartridge inside can rupture, blasting metal shrapnel into the vehicle and endangering everyone inside. Essentially, this defect turns a life-saving device into a weapon.

Experts involved in the Chevy Takata airbag recall note that these airbags don’t have enough of the drying agent that regulates the force with which they deploy, causing explosions rather than saving lives.

A growing number of consumers who own vehicles involved in the recall have filed lawsuits against their car’s manufacturer and Takata itself, the airbag manufacturer. Takata has been hit with so many lawsuits and fines that it recently filed bankruptcy.

Manufacturers may have been aware of the dangerous involved with these Takata airbags for a significant period of time. However, many customers claim that their vehicle’s manufacturer failed to warn them about the serious risks associated with the airbag system.
