- Who: Honda is recalling 406,290 Civic vehicles equipped with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels.
- Why: The wheels may detach due to a manufacturing error, increasing the crash risk.
- Where: The recall affects vehicles in the United States.
Honda has issued a recall for more than 400,000 Civic vehicles due to a potential issue with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels that could detach from the vehicle, posing a significant crash risk.
The recall, announced on Oct. 31, affects 406,290 units, specifically targeting models from 2016 to 2021.
The recall notice, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), highlights a manufacturing defect in which the steel lug seat inserts were not properly pressed into the nut-seating surface of the aluminum wheels.
This flaw can cause the wheel nut to loosen and eventually lead to the wheel detaching from the vehicle, as reported by Honda. “Wheel detachment can cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the recall states.
According to media reports, the issue was first identified in July 2024 during a routine inspection in Japan, where missing lug seat inserts were discovered on a customer’s vehicle. Honda’s subsequent investigation revealed that some unfinished wheels were mistakenly shipped as finished products due to a mishap at a supplier’s factory in Italy.
Honda will inspect and replace wheels free of charge, recall notice states
Honda has assured that dealers will inspect and replace the wheels and hubs as necessary, free of charge.
The company began notifying dealers on Oct. 31 and plans to send owner notification letters by Dec. 8. Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering their vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website starting Nov. 6.
For more information about the recall, Honda owners are encouraged to contact Honda’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or visit the NHTSA website to verify if their vehicle is part of the recall.
Honda states it has not received any reports of injuries related to this recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Currently, Honda is facing a lawsuit accusing the company of refusing repairs under warranty to faulty 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines, found in vehicles like the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Acura RDX and TLX from model years 2016 to 2022.
