The gout medication Uloric has, unfortunately, been linked with some serious and even life-threatening complications, including Uloric cardiac attack. A Uloric cardiac attack can be deadly.
A growing number of Uloric users are coming forward with reports alleging that they have suffered from heart-related Uloric side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has even issued a warning about Uloric’s link with heart-related deaths.
If you or someone you love has suffered from an Uloric cardiac attack or other serious side effects of the gout medication, you may be able to pursue litigation.
Background of Uloric
Uloric (also known by its generic name, febuxostat) is a relatively recent gout medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. Though it was brought onto the market relatively recently, Uloric has quickly risen in popularity.
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid. Symptoms of gout include swelling, redness, and severe joint pain. To treat gout, Uloric works to reduce the amount of uric acid in the body. Unfortunately, the medication has been linked with some serious side effects like a Uloric cardiac attack.
Side Effects of Uloric
Of course, any medication is expected to come with certain effects, but patients are typically given warning of these potential risks. However, some risks associated with Uloric may be far more severe than patients are warned about.
After a recent study, the FDA warned about the possible Uloric cardiovascular risk linked with the popular gout medication. Upon Uloric’s approval in 2009, the FDA required that Uloric’s manufacturer, Takeda, undergo a clinical safety trial for the drug.
According to the study, Uloric, when compared with the gout drug allopurinol (brand names Zyloprim and Aloprim), carries with it an increased risk of cardiovascular injuries like a Uloric cardiac attack.
“Health care professionals should consider this safety information when deciding whether to prescribe or continue patients on febuxostat,” said the FDA. “Patients should talk to your healthcare professionals if you have any questions or concerns. Do not stop taking your medicine without first consulting with your healthcare professional.”
Filing an Uloric Lawsuit
A former Takeda safety consultant filed a whistleblower Uloric lawsuit over side effects in 2012, alleging that the drugmaker hid important information about the drug’s side effects from the federal government and, by extension, the public. According to the whistleblower lawsuit, Takeda failed to reveal the risk of potentially fatal side effects of Uloric when combined with other common drugs like warfarin, which has reportedly caused the deaths of some Uloric patients.
If you or someone you love has suffered from a Uloric cardiac attack or other serious side effects of Uloric, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by side effects of Uloric, or bring a loved one back to life, litigation may be able to help alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
In general, Uloric lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
