Grieving Widow Says Husband Died of Lung Cancer from AsbestosLung cancer from asbestos is a prominent concern for retirees of industrial careers, along with United States military veterans, due to the likelihood that they were exposed to asbestos while on the job.

Many of these people have filed legal action against the 3M Company and other manufacturers for allegedly not disclosing the fact that their products could have contained asbestos, nor the potential health consequences like lung cancer from asbestos that came with exposure.

In a recent asbestos lawsuit, plaintiff Sheila C. alleges that her late husband, James C., developed lung cancer from asbestos and later died from the disease.

Sheila has named a number of manufacturing companies in her lawsuit like 3M Company and CBS Corporation, for allegedly supplying, selling, and installing asbestos products in her husband’s work environment. According to the asbestos lung cancer lawsuit, James had worked in a variety of locations including the ITT Rayonier plant in Jesup, Ga. from 1968 to 2010.

During this time, James reportedly inhaled asbestos fibers on a daily basis and was not aware of the health risks until long after his employment ended. James was diagnosed with asbestos lung cancer on Aug. 24, 2016, and died from the disease less than a year later on Feb. 9, 2017.

Sheila had opted to file legal action soon after his death, alleging James’s lung cancer from asbestos was caused by the failure of 3M and CBS to warn him about the substance in his work environment.

Overview of Lung Cancer from Asbestos

Asbestos is a fibrous material that has been used a manufacturing and industrial material for decades due to its fire and chemical resistant qualities. It was also cheap to utilize making it a favorite for manufacturers.

Asbestos reached its peak in popularity during World War II, when a number of United States Navy shipyards and vessels were equipped with asbestos for insulation. Asbestos was used in almost every application of manufacturing and industrial purpose, trickling down to private homes and household appliances.

Given how widespread the use of asbestos was in the past, it was quite alarming when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warned that it was potentially carcinogenic. It has been found that asbestos poses a number of health risks to people in the surrounding environment, spurring the EPA to strictly regulate the material and impose strict removal procedures.

When asbestos is inhaled or swallowed, the fibers can become lodged in the lungs and fester after a certain number of years and even dcased. Asbestos lung cancer can take up to 35 years to progress to the point where the patient exhibits symptoms resulting in latent diagnoses and limited treatment options.

For these reasons, manufacturing companies are required to give disclosures to their clients about potential asbestos exposure when installing and working with their products. Sheila alleges her husband and other employees were given no such warnings, causing James to suffer exposure and develop lung cancer from asbestos.
