steering wheel airbag Takata recallAccording to an online blog on caranddriver.com, GM recalled 3,640,162 of their domestically distributed vehicles because of a potential problem with frontal airbag deployment in car crashes.

Notification of this recall was recorded with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in September 2016. Owners of the makes and models affected by this problem may qualify to file an airbag malfunction lawsuit.

The key problem motivating the recall was the discovery that a sensor module in several GM vehicles over model years 2014-2017 was failing to initiate both seatbelt tension and inflation of frontal airbags. The failure was related to the module slipping into a testing mode without provocation or reason on a random basis. The cars, trucks, SUVs, and specialized vehicles affected by this potential problem and recall are:

  • 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Encore, Chevrolet Spark EV & SS
  • 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore
  • 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD & 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD & 3500 HD, Yukon,    Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade & Escalade ESV

Owners of GM vehicles fitting into the year range, make, and model categories listed may qualify to file an airbag malfunction lawsuit, especially if they were in a crash and the frontal airbags did not employ as expected.

The filing of an airbag malfunction lawsuit is an important way to hold the giant automobile manufacturer responsible for releasing a defective product on the market whose part failure could contribute to loss of life or severe injury.

In this case, according to the caranddriver.com blog, GM was able to discover the defect through the diligence of an employee who found out about a crash involving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

The frontal airbags did not inflate as expected in a crash and this stimulated further research into other accidents that had happened over the previous three months of summer.

It was after this research review that the decision was made to initiate this large recall of automobiles. Any vehicles that have had their airbags deployed in a crash will have the sensor module in question replaced as part of the process.

Vehicles produced by the company after the summer of 2016 will not need to respond to the recall notification as the factory will have put in new modules with all necessary software updates to prevent the problem with deployment. It is expected that repair of defective sensing modules will occur shortly.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car crash with one of these listed GM vehicles from model years 2014-2017 and have had to endure pain and suffering, you might have cause to file an airbag malfunction lawsuit.

This would be extremely imperative to recover medical expenses and, in the event of a wrongful death of a loved one, funeral expenses and replacement of loss of income. Fill out our form for a free initial consultation of your case.
