GM ignition switch recall class action lawsuitGeneral Motors (GM) is expected to face more GM recall class action lawsuits following yet another recall, this time over a short circuit that could disable airbags and other safety features.

With this new complication, the total number of cars recalled worldwide is expected to rise considerably, from the current 16 million. An ignition switch recall blamed in numerous deaths has spurred GM ignition switch class action lawsuits and multiple investigations of the automaker.

The latest GM vehicle recalls were announced on June 6 after the auto company alerted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to the airbag problems the day before.

This recall specifically affects about models of the 2013-2014 Chevrolet Spark and 2013 Buick Encore, as well as the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The vehicles could have a short-circuit that could disable the front air bags, the safety belt pretensions, and the Automatic Occupancy Sensing module.

Other recalls this year involve the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD trucks and 2015 Silverado HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra HD, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles. Each of those vehicles reportedly had technical errors with their base radios that prevented audible alarms from sounding. Essentially drivers were not given audible warnings that the key is in the ignition, the driver’s door is open, or their seat belt is not buckled.

Overview of the GM Ignition Switch Recall

Despite the severity of the airbag complication, the brunt of GM’s legal concerns comes from the ignition switch design defect. GM initiated a recall this year, and the company admitted that it was aware that 13 deaths had occurred over this design defect. Some estimates say it is responsible for as many as 300.

The defect allows the car’s key to unintentionally move or switch to the “accessory” or “off” position. This causes the engine to turn off, which can both cause an accident and also switches off the airbags. The company is facing  GM ignition recall class action lawsuits over how it handled the ignition switch problems.

GM released a critical internal investigation, indicating the automaker had known about the ignition defect since 2002, but had failed to take action to recall the vehicles or warn the public. The company described the conduct of how its employees handled the matter as incompetent and neglectful.

With the company already facing more than 80 GM ignition switch recall lawsuits, and the number expecting to grow, efforts to consolidate these lawsuits are being taken. GM states that it plans to fairly compensate families for every injury and death, but intends to fight claims regarding the value of the vehicles.

They make crappy cars and this is coming from someone who drove Chevy my entire life.
Once I got behind the wheel of a VW and Audi I will never ever drive a piece of crap Chevy again.
