GM class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group of 10 consumers are suing General Motors LLC.
  • Why: The plaintiffs claim certain vehicle engines are defective and prone to catastrophic failure.
  • Where: The General Motors class action lawsuit was filed in Michigan federal court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that General Motors equipped certain vehicles with defective engines that are prone to catastrophic failure and issued an “inadequate” recall to address the issues.

Lead plaintiff Robert Houchin filed the class action lawsuit against GM on May 16 in Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the GM class action lawsuit, certain vehicles are equipped with defective 6.2-liter V8 EcoTec3 L87 engines that are prone to catastrophic failure.

The plaintiffs allege that the engines are susceptible to damage and sudden failure, resulting in a loss of power during vehicle operation. They say the defect arises from improper crankshaft dimensions and surface finish, along with bearings that cannot withstand the heat and friction generated in the engines.

The affected vehicles include 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade, 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban, 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, 2021-2024 GMC Yukon and 2021-2024 GMC Yukon XL, the GM class action states.

GM knew of defect and recall is inadequate, plaintiffs claim

The plaintiffs allege that GM was aware of the defect but failed to disclose it to consumers. They claim that GM conducted three internal investigations into the issue, with the first one closing in February 2022, but the company did not take action to remedy the problem.

The plaintiffs further allege that GM’s recent recall of the affected vehicles is inadequate, as it does not address the root causes of the defect.

The class action claims that the GM recall only offers a temporary fix by replacing the stock oil with a higher viscosity oil rather than redesigning the defective components.

The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone who purchased or leased an affected vehicle. They are suing for breach of warranty and fraudulent omission and are seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

On April 24, GM recalled nearly 600,000 vehicles, including select 2021–2024 Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models, due to potential engine failures caused by defective components that could increase the risk of a crash.

Hill of DiCello Levitt LLP; W. Daniel “Dee” Miles III, H. Clay Barnett III, J. Mitch Williams, Dylan T. Martin and Trenton H. Mann of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles P.C.; Timothy G. 1. Joseph Kennedy says:

I have a 2019 Chevrolet in the Chevrolet dealership where I bought the 1500 Silverado with a 6.2 liter motor. Been there since July 28th waiting for a new $12,000 motor. Called GM several times for help as did the dealer with no help. Said it’s out of warranty sorry. Same motor same problem. Dealer says they don’t know when they can get a motor. They also don’t have anything yet for me to drive while I wait. l

  2. Martha Fulkerson says:

I had a 2013 GMC terrain Denali the PCV valve froze and busted the motor they want 10,000 to fix please include me in this

    1. Martha Fulkerson says:

      You had 58,000 miles

  3. Steve Lola says:

Please include me in this class action lawsuit. I bought a 2023 Trail Boss with the 6.2 lt L87 engine 2 months prior to the “stop sale” order by GM. My truck “passed inspection” and was given the “new” oil. Unacceptable!

  4. Charles Jipson says:

I bought a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado with the 2.7 turbo. I had problems with the truck from the first oil change. The oil cooler went on it then after that was replaced the turbo went on it on the way home from the first repair. Then the front camera had to get replaced because it kept causing the truck to go in limp mode. Which after the camera was fixed the truck constantly would go into limp mode. The 2022 Chevy is nice to look at but who wants to pay that much for a lawn ornament?

  5. Rebecca Sternthal says:

Please join us as well. We have a 2023 Tahoe and haven’t been able
To get this resolved since May

  6. Christopher Serafin says:

Please include us in this settlement. We brought a 2020 end of yr, so 2021 by manufacturing standards, Sierra 1500 Denali which is on its 3rd motor because of this GM recall. When we bought this truck carfax was clean and showed no defects. When the motor seized while driving no less the dealership informed us that we are getting third motor for this truck. We had to wait three months before it was fixed.

  7. Jim and Debbie Gideon says:

Please include us in this class action as claimants. We are able to forward copies of all paperwork and service records by email or hard copies by postal mail since our purchase in June of 2024. Our concerns are for those addressed in this class action and the greater devaluation of the truck since there is no buyback option to compensate owners especially those with a truck loan which includes interest.

We’re in Texas and received notification from CARFAX in May of 2025 and looked up by our VIN# at the NHTSA.gov site for any additional information and it is a repeat of the CARFAX notification about the recall on the engine of our 2022 GMC SIERRA AT4 6.2L. On June 16, 2025 we received the formal letter of recall from GM and brought our truck to our dealer for their mechanics to examine the engine as requested in the letter today, June 26, 2025. Their determination was that the engine does not need replacement and they simply did an oil change to the recommended oil 0-40 with a change to the oil cap with a copy of the insert for the manual with a copy of the service invoice detailing their actions and results. In short, we ‘got the bandaid’ with the addition of an 150,000 warranty, but we know this is inadequate since the truth is out as concerns the engine design adding to the devaluation of the truck.

There is much wrong with the design and even instruction of what oil is used too. In Texas where where weather conditions get very hot is similar to other parts of the world such as the Middle East, choice of optimal oil is a consideration for engine care. We corresponded with a bot on a GM dealer site found by looking for dealers in Dubai and it recommended 5-30 synthetic! My husband bought this truck because he is a decorated and disabled veteran with alot of back pain and an automatic vs. our older 2007 Nissan 4wd Frontier with manual transmission causes too much back pain to shift and drive for him so we thought this would be great. It does not have a manual parking brake that can dual as an emergency brake either. Instead, it has a button parking brake that is dependent on electronics, if the electronics goes out and we need to use an emergency brake, what will happen? If we could we would simply return it for a full refund plus the interest on the loan! We would like to be part of this class action because this truck will not last like the Nissan 2007 has with no trouble at low cost since we always service it and that is what we wanted!

    1. Marife Ringor says:

Include me as well , bought my 2021 escalade esv oct 2024 , receive recall notification beginning of june 2025 but no remedy is available then 3weeks later while driving on the way to NJTP my truck started jerking while it decelerated to 36mph and tuck could barely be driven. It was the transmission failing. My truck only has 37k miles. Dropped off truck to dealer June 26 and it’s now August and I still don’t have my truck back as the parts are bs ordered and was advised this issue is separate from recall smfh. PLEASE INCLUDE ME ON THIS LAWSUIT. They should remedy with buyback and return our down payment as well as the interest on the loan and emotional/financial stress. We are literally waiting for the unexpected crash due to engine failure. Recall number L87 .

  8. Barbara Avitabile says:

I have a 2020 Terrain 4 cyl engine with less than 40,000 miles having the same problem. $9,000 engine replacement needed HELP

  9. Karen Eastman says:

My husband and I specially ordered a 2021 GMC Denali and is and saved for year’s for at our age will be our last year for a new vehicle. My husband is a general movers retirary and this would of never happen when he worked there for they always had to gage all parts to make sure they met the specks. General Motors need to be responsible for all these vehicles for we bought a truck that’s suppose to be a safe and reliable.
