A new class action lawsuit alleges General Motors sold certain vehicles equipped with an engine defect that can cause the engine to spontaneously fail.
Plaintiffs Mezanur Rahaman, Gerald Reed and Farrah Forrest claim the alleged engine defect affects 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.
The plaintiffs argue the alleged defect can cause the engine to fail suddenly and without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
“The defect causes extensive damage that is difficult, time-consuming and expensive to repair,” the GM class action says.
The plaintiffs want to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased or leased a class vehicle in the United States. They also want to represent Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York subclasses.
Class action: GM sold nearly 600,000 vehicles equipped with engine defect
The plaintiffs argue GM sold nearly 600,000 vehicles equipped with the alleged engine defect, which they claim is caused by a problem with the connecting rod or crankshaft engine component.
“The defect presents a serious safety issue that can cause serious bodily harm,” the GM class action says.
The plaintiffs claim GM has refused to provide an adequate or lasting remedy for the alleged engine defect under its express and implied warranties.
“Defendant has not offered to compensate plaintiffs and class members for the diminished value of their vehicles associated with the premium price that they paid for safety and reliability,” the GM class action argues.
The plaintiffs claim GM is guilty of breach of express and implied warranty, fraud and unjust enrichment and of violating the Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law, New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act and New York General Business Law.
They demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.
In May 2025, a group of 10 consumers also sued GM over the same vehicles with defective engines, claiming the vehicles are prone to catastrophic failure and calling GM’s recall “inadequate” to address the problem.
