GM recalls overview:

  • Who: General Motors recently issued recalls for its Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Express, GMC Yukon and GMC Savana vehicles, among others.
  • Why: The automaker initiated the recalls over tailgate unlatching, rear wheels locking up, a software issue and a failure to display a warning light
  • Where: The recalls affect certain vehicle owners nationwide.

GM recently issued recalls involving unlatching tailgates, rear wheels locking up, a software issue and a failure to display a warning light in the event of a loss of brake fluid.

The recalls involve certain GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Savana, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Express and Chevrolet Tahoe vehicles, among others.

An automaker may choose to initiate a recall if it determines a vehicle contains an issue that could endanger drivers, passengers, pedestrians and/or other vehicles on the road.

130K+ Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra vehicles over tailgate concerns

GM issued a recall for more than 130,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles last month over concerns their tailgates could unlatch while in park

The recall involves 132,037 model year 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles and model year 2024 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates.

“An unlatched tailgate may open and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash,” the GM recall says.

GM says it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies in the recalled vehicles at no cost to vehicle owners.

GM recalls 460K+ diesel trucks, SUVs over rear wheel issues

GM issued a recall for more than 460,000 diesel trucks and SUVs in November over concerns their rear wheels could suddenly lock up as a result of a transmission control valve failure.

The recall involves 461,839 model year 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban vehicles, model year 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles, and model year 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles.

“Rear wheel lockup can increase the risk of a crash,” the GM recall says.

GM says it plans to remedy the issue by having dealers install new transmission control module software in the recalled vehicles free of charge.

77K+ Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana vehicles recalled over software issue

GM issued a recall for more than 77,000 model year 2022-2023 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles last month over concerns they contain a software issue in their transmission control modules that could increase the risk of a crash

The automaker says the software issue may cause the recalled vehicles to move in an unintended direction and/or lead to harsh shifting, reduced power, rear wheel lockup and unintended deceleration.

“Rear wheel lockup or moving in an unintended direction can increase the risk of a crash,” the GM recall says.

GM says it plans to remedy the issue by having dealers update the transmission control module software in the recalled vehicles free of charge.

GM recalls almost 450K vehicles over warning light failure

GM issued a recall for nearly 450,000 vehicles in September over concerns they could fail to display a warning light in the event a loss of brake fluid occurs.

The recall involves 449,671 model year 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles and model year 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles.

“Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash,” the GM recall says.

GM says it plans to remedy the issue by updating the software in the recalled vehicles’ electronic brake control module in-person at a GM dealer or through an over-the-air software update at no cost to vehicle owners.

I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado 3l Duramax with about 76k miles on it now. I received a recall notice about the rear wheel lock up issue. Is there going to be a class action lawsuit for this specific problem? Add me to it.

Who can I talk to so I can add my 2015 Gm Seirra 1500sle on the list for the recall with Gm

How do I join for bad transmission in my 2017. Had to take out in at 60,000 for shuddering and then I started getting light on nag transmission and it would go off, I caked them and they told me if no light on it couldn’t be checked, which i find out they lied and they kept telling me the same. Now 154,000 and transmission failure and in going be put off pocket 5 to 7000 and they knew they had this problem. For a retired gm worker they care nothing about us or the public, they need to replace these terrible transmissions then knew they had this problem and lied to all of us. I can’t afford to replace it and now outta setting on my drive. Making 3000 a month retirement doesn’t but much thesedays worth this cost of the economy sucking us dry from these billionaires. Please help.

I have a 2020 GMC Acadia and the rear wheels locked up while in motion and the TCM is bad and has to be replaced. Luckily no one was hurt.

  3. Austin Melin says:

Was washing a gmc 3500 Denali 2024 outside. Moved it inside to dry it off. Used the side step to get in the bed of the truck to dry the top off. Proceeded to get out of the bed of the truck by going over the tailgate. Had one hand and one foot over and the tailgate came down. Ended up fracturing my radius, and now have a torn scapholunate ligament. The hand surgeon is saying I may have to have carpal bones removed and then fuse everything else together.

  4. Alisha Ward says:

Purchased a 2024 gmc sierra 3500 and driving down road tailgate has opened itself with our dog and other items in the back. Was parking one time and it automatically just opened. It’s been to dealer twice for this recall and still called them to complain that it opened again. Dealership said they fixed it twice and we had to wait for further GM guidance. The recall took forever anyways as there was no fix for this for the longest time.

  6. Darryl Brown says:

I’m not sure what we need to do about GM’s vehicles. This is getting ridiculous. I purchased a new 2018 Silverado in 2018 (redline addition) after having it for 6 years and 58000 km it developed the well know torque converter shutter. Took it back to the dealer where they said that GM’s fix was to flush the transmission oil and replace with a synthetic oil at the owner cost. I purchased 6 year extended warranty when I purchased the truck. However they called this fix a schedule maintenance and GM will not pay for the supplies and work. According the the maintenance schedule it not due till 72000 km. So to me this should be covered by GM. It’s GM’s cheap bandage fix rather than repairing the real problem so it should be at least covered by them. A recall to do this before the symptoms occur would be far better than waiting for it to show up and cause premature transmission wear. Also the bulletin does say to change the filter. Which I did at an additional cost to me. Craziest thing I’ve ever hear changing oil without doing filter. GM is really putting out poor quality vehicles and I hope their sells will reflect this. They need to step up and take responsibility.

  9. Robert Handick Jr says:

I just purchased a used 2022 Silverado 2500 LT, 6.6 gas with 23,xxx miles. I assume the transmission issue with rear axle locking up pertains to my truck as well.

this should also include gmc seirra denali!!!! We have a 2022 gmc seirra that we purchased Branson new with 19 miles on it! this truck has been nothing but problems that started immediately upon exiting the lot! It wad in the shop more times than I can count! the trucks tailgate has dropped while driving causing us to lose everything out of our bed, costing us 1000’s it also dropped while pulling a trailer, putting a huge dent in the tailgate. it slams its breaks while on cruise control, causing us to hit the dash, steering wheel etc. its only a matter of time before this truck kills us or other motorist! Gmc’s only offer was to give us a free 100,000 mile extended warranty, which we declined because we this additional protection at the same time we purchased our truck! everything was consistently reported to gmc reported consistently- but it fell on deaf ears; a complete waste of time!!! now I just keep a running record of every occurrence!!! one day they will be forced to take responsibility, quit possibly after the truck injures or kills someone!!!
