GM engine failure investigation overview:

  • Who: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a preliminary investigation into nearly 878,000 General Motors vehicles.
  • Why: The investigation follows reported incidents of engine failure in certain vehicles.
  • Where: The GM engine failure investigation is active in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a preliminary investigation into almost 878,000 General Motors vehicles following complaints of engine failures, Reuters reports.

The probe targets specific models from the 2019-2024 production years, including Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade trucks and SUVs equipped with the L87 V8 engine. In total, an estimated 877,710 vehicles are involved in the investigation.

The NHTSA received 39 complaints and additional early warning field reports from drivers, many of whom noted that there were no signs of trouble before the engines failed.

Initial probe will assess severity of GM engine failure, NHTSA says

The investigation, categorized as a preliminary evaluation, will allow NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation to determine how widespread the issue is and whether it poses significant safety concerns. This phase will also help assess the severity of the problem.

Vehicle owners have so far reported incidents of bearing failures leading to engine seizures or cases where the engine block was breached by a connecting rod, according to the auto safety regulator.

Such failures could cause the engine to lose power suddenly, increasing the risk of accidents. However, no crashes or fires have been linked to the issue so far.

GM has said it will cooperate with NHTSA throughout the investigation, affirming its commitment to addressing safety issues. The outcome of the probe will determine whether a broader recall or additional safety measures are necessary, the Associated Press reports.

Meanwhile, GM recently issued a recall for more than 7,600 model year 2025 Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicles over concerns they may not make a sound loud enough to alert pedestrians of their approach.

And last year, GM reached a $35 million fuel pump settlement resolving claims the company equipped GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trucks with defective engine parts. The class action lawsuit claimed GM sold trucks with defective fuel injection pumps that cause engine failure. These pumps allegedly generate metal shavings that contaminate the fuel injection system.

Does the engine problem with the AFM affect the 2017 GMCs 5.3L too.

  2. Tommy abell says:

2021 chevy silverado 6.2 L87 oil pu.p failure, ti.ing chain failure and broken timing guide, at 55,000, warranty replaced those items at 72,000 oil pump and lifter failure while driving, instant castrophic engine failure, gm won’t cover it.. I believe lift and crank bearings were already damaged from previous issue a d weren’t examined or replaced.

  3. Damon Barbee says:

Had the same issue with my 2020 GMC Yukon . I had to replace the engine … It sucks because the recall doesn’t cover 2020 Yukon with the same damn issue 😡😡😡😡😡

I recently went to a dealership 04/23/25, traded in my 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander sport with 40,000 miles for a 2021 Chevy Silverado with 80,000 miles they gave showed me the whole print outs of how this truck was maintained with them, they gave me the truck to take home and i had not even test drived it, then I come back to sign paperwork and find out that Warranty was nor gab insurance was not included, a week out of having truck i felt a pulling, brought back and they told me it was nothing, came back a second time and was told it was the transmission, now I am reading all these reviews about the transmission going out 2 and 3 times, my first payment is coming up and I dont have my truck or has it been worked on, was told they were putting me in another truck with less miles and now giving me the round around and that they are fixing me truck. I did get a loaner to get around but they did me wrong. now I dont even have my other car that i traded in, they should just put me in another truck, I need help/advise

  6. Chris Bonin says:

I had a 2015 Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel LTZ and the cp4 injector went out at 149,900 Miles when it’s guaranteed to blow at 150k and I spent $12,436.70 to have it repaired. After I had it repaired the steel fuel line blew three more times every two and a half to three months. I finally got rid of that truck but decided to slender 80k to go buy brand new that way i wouldn’t have any concerning issues for av while. I also filed this class action lawsuit when I heard about it 1.5- 2 years ago but the messed up part is, if the truck didn’t come from the 6-8 states specifically you’re not eligible to receive the money!!! Now what sense does that make??? It shouldn’t matter where, what, how, when, the state the truck was originally sold in, if it’s the year, model, and meets the specifications of the problem they should reimburse us the money. If anyone else has this problem/scenario please let me know and BLOW this comment up. I bought the truck in Columbia, South Carolina but I live in Augusta, Georgia and neither one of those States falls into the category of where they will reimbursement funds.

I just bought a 2019 Chevy Silverado in February 2025 10,000 miles later in May of 2025 lifter is shot and possible the Cam.

  7. Cody Pressley says:

Today, I received a quote of $15,000 to replace the engine in my 2019 Chevy Silverado. My truck has approximately 83,000 miles, which I believe is relatively low mileage for a vehicle of this type.

This situation is extremely frustrating and disappointing. I’ve maintained my truck properly, and I did not expect to be facing such a major and costly repair at this point in its life.

I would appreciate any support or guidance regarding possible warranty coverage, goodwill assistance, or next steps.

    Thank you,

My 2022 GMC engine locked up almost 5 weeks ago. Less than 47000 miles. No warning, just shut down. New engine on order supposedly but no idea when I will see it. It’s spring and I need a truck!

  9. James Spinks says:

2021 Engine Failure just out of warranty. Cost me $10k. This is my exact issue:

    – GM service update number: N212353840
    – General Motors has issued a service update for 2021 model year full-size truck and SUV models that are being shipped to dealerships and may be affected by valve lifter problems.
    – The problem: affected vehicles may have or may be prone to experiencing a broken valve lifter lock pin spring. This problem only affectes vehicles equipped with the naturally aspirated 5.3L L84 V8 or 6.2L L87 V8 gasoline engines.
    – The hazards: this problem does not pose a safety hazard, however a broken valve lifter long spring can lead to various engine problems. As we reported in a previous article that addressed these widespread GM V8 engine valve lifter issues, affected vehicles may produce a service engine light, along with a misfire, peculiar engine noise and engine damage.
    – The fix: dealership technicians are instructed to replace both banks of cylinders in affected vehicles. These repairs must be performed upon arrival at the dealership and before the vehicles are sold to customers. This was not done.
    – Affected components: valve lifter, valve lifter lock pin spring.
    – Number of affected vehicles: it’s currently not clear how many vehicles were delivered to dealers in need of a valve lifter repair.
    – Owners should: this service update is for dealerships only and only affects vehicles that are en route to or have already been delivered to GM dealerships.

This update clearly instructs the dealer to replace every V8 lifter on their lot – prior to being sold. Sold vehicles should be “replace upon failure” free of charge to customers.
